Yes, all that white space is an issue. Even in 99% of games it's all black. Ya see, white space is distracting because it is very bright. Black is dark and recessive causing your stuff to come to the foreground and feel solid. White will make your stuff sink in and feel empty.
Also, like your character said, you don't have any walls. This makes the backgrounds seem cheap and unfinished.
Your actual people look fine, so keep them as is. You may wish to thicken the outline around them so as to make them stand out more. I can only dread how bad they will blend in a finished background.
Also, your text seems broken. You may wish to move to a different font. Arial Black and Times New Roman are some of the easiest to read when shrunk down, so they would probably be your best bet.
Good luck fixing those flaws. What I see now doesn't really look too good, so hopefully you'll bring your stuff up to par by the time you start updating again.
Your text bubbles are very over pixelated, and the text is running together (note the i and the c). Although the sprites are custom, they seem very glitchy. I wouldn't say off center, but the pixles seem to...slant. The room is seperated from anything else, giving you that isometric FFT feel. However, it's not a good one. It leaves mass puddles of white space.
When you say "Re Reconstruction" I look foreward to seeing the changes. Hopefully the flaws I saw will be among the changes made, as right now I'm not really impressed.
