Let me tell you how this is set up. The Chronicles of Fangaia is a collection of books written by a decendant of a Knight named Peter, who is a main character. This decendant, Alan Paladin, writes a history to clear his name and the reputation of the Knights, who are seen as evil conquerors by the Capian Empire. This is a prologue to explain the setting and what Fangaia is and what the Epic Wars are, etc. Here's what the book says:

“A new age has arrived in this ancient land we call Fangaia. This world has many scars and has witnessed many wars, betrayals, and victories. I have witnessed this death of the old age. It is I, Alan Paladin, who will reveal to you the truth passed down from my ancestors for generations. We have come to know Trenton Maskello as a wonder, warrior, and traitor. But Maskello is only one of the victims in a greater betrayal. My grandfather’s grandfather, Peter, the last Palidin of the Knights of Facren, is another victim of this betrayal. The Knights are know for their trechery, but their struggle in the Epic Wars, their achievements for Fangaia, are all but forgotten. It is my duty to enlighten you and the people of Fangaia and to give the knowlegde of the glory and the murder of the Knights of Facren.”
