I has a tangential thought here. Historically hunter-gatherer societies' structures were strongly influenced by climate. In warmer regions with rich soils, women held higher roles and were primary providers. Stuck near the home by child-rearing duties, they were the farmers and often the cooks, menders, and inventors (having more free time thanks to plentiful food). In colder regions, the men were more esteemed and essential, relying on the hunt. I can feel this same dynamic in your story except that Ron's world is colored by powerful, magic-using women.
