This briefing was necessary to set up what is going to happen in a few weeks, but I thought a few cameos would help. So…name-dropping time.
Of course, the “young superdude” is Superdan of BAD GUY HIGH at http://www.drunkduck.com/Bad_Guy_High/, and used with the kind permission of his creator, the Red Death. BGH is one of the most well-drawn, most funny, and most popular strips Drunk Duck has, and an excellent superhero parody. Originally I had scripted “generic superhero type” in that spot…but how much better to use Superdan, whose origin is having been bitten by a radioactive Superman? Considering the type of adventures Superdan gets in, it isn't that far-fetched to see him at the Armory, in an untold adventure.
Similarly, the “rubber mallet”, powerful enough to destroy at least one universe's “Satan”, is from the excellent fantasy The Gods of Arr-Kaleen at http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Gods_of_ArrKelaan/ and is the favored weapon of the main character, Ronson, the “god” of apathy and alcohol. We were grateful for permission to use objects or people from that strip by Chuck Rowles, the creator of the strip. How the Keepers got permission to keep it, at least for a little while, is a story yet to be told.
Whether the Cosmic Cataclysm Crystal has anything to do with the Cosmic Cataclysm mentioned here in SUPER STUPOR at http://www.superstupor.com/sust12242007.shtml is still a matter of speculation. No “crystal” was ever mentioned in SUPER STUPOR. Only Randy Milholland, who created SUPER STUPOR (as well as the excellent SOMETHING POSITIVE) knows for sure, and I haven't yet been able to get permission from him to make a concrete link. So…for now…we'll just call it coincidence.
Maybe.
Will ANT keep yawning? Will Dasien stay in her bunny rabbit pajamas? Stay tuned.
Both links works OK for me. But the website can sometimes be VERY slow or not working at all.
Thanks for pointing out Gods of Arr-kelaan, it has been a fun read :)
I knew I saw this god of alcohol somewhere before. Sadly it was not in his comic of origin...it was.. ah here. A guest comic at Order of the Stick. The webcomic world is kind of like that six degrees game...without Kevin Bacon in it.
Well, I know he can be separated from it.
"Coming Home Vol. 1" has a storyline that seems to suggest that, for Ronson, merely giving the mallet away is not that easy. Read "Volume Zero".
Again, I'll have to thumb through the books a bit more to be sure.
_I_ went through it fairly recently, and there was one point that it was separated from him for a while, while Ronson was trapped in Hell with his wife's soul. When Ronson appealed for SOMETHING to come rescue them. Then it came. So the mallet can exist separately (even multiple dimensions) away from Ronson...
Of course, we're not sure WHEN the Keepers acquired it. Given Ronson's narration of the last few chapters, one assumes the current "Gods" is happening in Ronson's past...and time gets tricky when you cross time-space continuums.
Maybe Ronson willingly relinquished it for a while, sick of it always being with him. Or maybe the Keepers snatched it out of a moment of time while it was separated from Ronson before, and will return it close to the time they...ahhh, aquired it.
Wow, I'm posting again!
If I remember correctly, the properties of the mallet are actually conditional, meaning that the fact that it's even a mallet is due to that it's possessed by Ronson. In fact, I'm not even sure if he can abandon it.
I'll have to thumb through my Gods of Arr-Kelaan books when I get home this evening.
To be perfectly honest, we didn't entirely work out exactly what it's doing at the Armory. Since it IS the mallet, it must be the one that belongs to Ronson.
That's okay, though. The art of being a writer includes the ability to make post-hoc explanations for things. I'm sure we'll have a stunningly brilliant explanation at some point in the future.
Sometimes, things just get lost in the shuffle, even when we set it up. We really don't get a good shot of Dasien's jammies, which is a shame.
If you really want to see what Mindmistress is referring to click here!
Kam, sorry about the goof, link is fixed.
Red, I'm blown away with the picture of our group at BGH. Group shots aren't easy, and some of our characters have pretty complicated armor and/or cosumes...(for instance, MM and ANT--heck you even got holes in Dasien's lower abs right!) and you did it with EASE. MOST impressive. Perez was mentioned not only for his group shots but how, from CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS to the AVENGERS/JUSTICE LEAGUE crossover, how good he is at interdimensional storylines.
DAJB: yeah, MM realizes they're mostly blue. But the pink bunny on them is the most striking/funniest thing about them--there are some more on her slippers, as we'll probably show next time.
cool! nice cameo, shame you cant do Alexis dropping off something, like an insanely powerful talent of your choosing locked into a bracelet. Every \power is possible on Xade as a magic talent yya know
Does MM know that D's pink bunny PJs are actually blue? I know they've got a pink bunny on them but, at first glance, I wasn't sure D was actually in shot!
Otherwise, cool as always!
George Perez! Because he's most known for group shots and team books, right? Yes! I am very happy with my character's cameo, well done! I also did a little promoting of Crossoverlord on my own comic to show my appreciation, hope you don't mind.
We have been fortunate enough to have a few artists who've given us the blanket *okay* to use any characters, as long as we credit them and link back (which is, of course, the LEAST we could do!).
This actually started when I wanted to use Ronson for the April Fool's Day gag, which didn't end up happening. Chuck did eventually get back to me, at which point he threw the "any character, any time" thing at me, to which I shouted "YES!" and began fist-pumping.
Have I mentioned lately that Chuck Rowles is the man?
What this means, kiddies, is that at some point, somewhere, we're going to have to work in my favorite god character, Bikk! The God of Capitalism.

It's rightchere. Count three comics down. Stop when you see Ronson.

Tuurontour, I'm afraid I'm getting a 503--access forbidden at your link.

Well...nevermind. I'm too tired to figure out what I messed up to make the link not show up. But the guest comic is still there.

Al, no problem. I understand how easy it is to make a mistake in the Authors Notes (Boy do I understand...) ;-)
