She never fully formed the concept that hung heavy in her mind when she thought of him. The spreading coldness in her chest was just the vestige of pain, the numbness of scar tissue. She never entirely stopped believing that if he returned, following the broken wires, it would go away.

She never believed that the coldness was symptomatic of something deeper than pain; she never realized that she hated him.
