Fusion Fan Art (By JKRComix)
EssayBee on April 17, 2012
Here's the first of TWO updates this week. This is an absolutely gorgeous pic of Fusion by JKR of JKRcomix.com (WARNING: it's an adult comic site). I've featured his art here several times before, but this is the first pic of Fusion he's done in a “traditional” comic style. JKR's been a big supporter of Fusion, as well as a big supporter of me even before Fusion launched, so check out his site if you're over 18 and are interested in some beautifully drawn adult comics. As I mentioned above, there will be a second update this week, so on Thursday, look for my colored version of this pic.
On a different note, Flamer had a cameo in Karabear Comics Unlimited (http://www.drunkduck.com/Karabear_Comics_Unlimited/5387493/)–he's just hanging out in an interdimensional gay bar (which actually makes sense given the Fab Five's origin–getting their powers from an interdimensional wormhole, and all). More on the Fab Five's interdimensional travels will be explained at some later point.

@Darth_Paul -- holy crap, I never noticed it before but you're right. She does look like an anorexic Kitty Pryde! Well, one interpretation at least. I can't remember the name of the artist off-hand but he did a great job on Kitty, making her look on the pretty side of normal. However, no that's not what I'm getting at. Fusion's nose is a bit wider, her lips don't look like a model's, and the bridge of the nose is not that pronounced. Her hair is also clearly thick and straight normally (you can even see it on the first issue cover) and that version has much finer, more teased hair.

To me she looks like Kitty Pryde & that's probably what smkinoshita is getting at. ;-)

@OrlahEhontas -- I'm half Japanese but look Caucasian, and I stand by my judgment. Really look at the eyes, mouth, cheekbones, and hair -- it's off-model. Just because there are people who look like a tanned Caucasian in SE Asia doesn't mean the drawing is right. Savuun's original character design shows her heritage (and she's not anorexic either). This work reminds me of anime -- not in the design, but in the fact that it's quite 'templated'. I like his earlier fanart better.

@smkinoshita - Having spent time in SE Asia and seeing a number of the people inhabiting that region having a face that many people would call "Caucasian with a deep tan" I, for one, don't see any problem with JKR's rendering of Savuun's face. The only thing I noticed was it's resemblance to an illustration of DC's Starfire or any number of energy based super-heroines. Which, if you care, is not a complaint, just an observation. And not having seen JKR's other work, I don't have a reference as to this drawings quality in regard to his other work, but I liked this one and intend to add his site to my list of web-comics-to-read which seems to be growing exponentially on a weekly basis. 5/5

it is a rare thing that a adult artist didn't go overboard with breast size, almost always a plus. by the way the site costs $15 a month, for anyone that is interested.

VERY well drawn

I hate to be the wet blanket here but I'm not a fan of this bit of fan art. JKR's previous work was far superior. Fusion looks like an under-nourished kid instead of a high-school student, but the most glaring issue is her face is Caucasian. This isn't JKR's lack of ability, this is the problem with what's accepted as 'traditional comic book style' and the problem with comics.

Maybe you should consider the costume design if you wish to give Fusion a "new look." :)

Tolrick--Yeah, I was floored when JKR sent it to me. JKR is an incredible artist (and he can draw circles around me), and he's able to do many styles flawlessly. Check out the "Issue #4 Variant Cover" and "Lunch Time for a Superhero" updates to see him draw Fusion in a Bruce Timm and his own cartoony style, respectively. (And the Lunch Time pic was just a doodled sketch that I inked and colored and not by any means a "finished" pic, and the lines are still great.) As for prints, I've been thinking about getting a print of the colored version of this pic (which will be up on Thursday)--I'll check with JKR to see if he's okay putting this up for sale someplace.

That is an awesome drawing of Savunn. Seriously. I wouldn't mind getting a print of this one. It's almost as good as your drawings Essay.
