Tex was originally chosen because I wanted a character in the team who was actually an arch-villain (hench-villains are never badass enough) in his “real life”… the character dynamics possibilities were just endless. However, we needed an arch-villain with wiggle room to develop, rather than a near-omnipotent and wholly evil/corrupt villain like say Mumm-Ra.

Tex offered the character we were looking for. In his original fiction, he led a gang of hardened outlaws. Yet, in one episode he helped a blind woman who was transporting a shipment of valuable kerium to finance the treatment of blind children. In screenshots I found, I also felt that he treated his henchmen with camaraderie rather than the abusive contempt that cartoon villains usually dish out to minions.

The fact that Tex was a gunslinger was an unintended bonus. The presentation of a tough-talking and tough-walking cowboy who beat up the hero in chapter 1 made him instantly popular with the readers and with Ed. I had to rein Ed in a few times, reminding him not to make Tex out to be too heroic or too likeable. This man was a killer and a thief, not a Wolverine with a heart of gold.
