And into dreamland. See, this is one of the weird things. I bring in this idea years ago that Max is a neuropath and he uses a special helmet to interface in some way with the ship. But I have never explained beyond that. I’ve been too busy going from action sequence to action sequence, from plot arc to plot arc. I’ve barely given anything of anybody’s back story. Maybe nobody cares. My wife says I usually err towards giving too much back story. But anyway, here it is. Max’s neuropathic gift manifests as something like REM sleep and gives him access to parts of the brain most people don’t consciously understand. Max doesn’t consciously understand them either (it’s like he’s dreaming). And here he is, in the planet’s interface, trying to figure out how to make it work. And suddenly he flashes back to his childhood. Bear with me. It’s relevant.
