think of scifi as being myths of the future.. some are cautionary tails that give us grim look into the future. in such stories tec is often to be feared. other stories; science and technology solve problems. for someone like montigo whom is building thinking ships and make it possible to link your mind to a computer, a positive view of technology is favorable to a negative one. he wants people who have a that so cool reaction not a omg your building the a monster..reaction so he picks people that are more likely to favor his world view.

Well Star Trek was monumental in breaking race and (basic) gender barriers, kind of hard to go beyond that in a setting where the main characters are part of a super-advanced technological society, without using an alien race, which would almost certainly defeat the purpose of exploring non-traditional binary gender issues, with the characters being used to portray the issues not being human.
