Yes, the main character from these stories always looked this way in my mind. Folks are going to ask, I know, why I chose this look for her: is it a Manga sellout? She appeared fully formed in my mind 30 years ago, long before I'd even heard of Manga. Besides, she's alien; an Imperial patrol ship rescued a floating lifepod and found her inside, near death. When she recovers she has no recollection whatsoever of who she is and where she comes from. The old amnesia angle, done to death? Not…really. The insidious truth behind Tara's amnesia is far more terrible than anyone could have ever imagined.
Floating in space in a lifeboat as an infant...sounds like the Superman story.
I was telling my old classmate Steve last night that I have a bad tendency to create these big, big stories (House of the Muses a prime example) that take me a decade or two or three to get around to. He told me that like Avatar, which is a mishmash of several different movie themes yet won all the Oscars it should have, it's not the story but HOW you present it.
He pointed out to me how to simplify and make it even better. That was a huge relief for me. I don't get to hobnob with too many other writers, and with his background in science fiction it was like we bridged the 20 year gap (been that long since we've seen each other) and sparked a creative dialogue that made me want to drag this story out of the pile and get it rolling.
I promise I'll finish it. ;)

Or the Gordon Dickson thing with the Start of the Dorsai, or The Chikde Cycle, that he has yet to finish. Though in that he was found floating in space in a lifeboat and as an infant.
Have bookmarked July for the introduction.
