Page 5: issue 4 - A Saucerful of Secrets

So now you know what was going on last page: it's one of my more interestingly designed characters. I realized while lettering this that neither has actually had their superhero name given on a comic page. That will be rectified on a couple pages, but Julie is talking to Fractal. Also, panel 5 I just had to do that mustache. Fractal is all about change, shifting between genders, races, heights, and (adult) ages, so I had the chance to do a nice old-timey mustache without it permanently being on a character. Fractal's costume is always shifting between fractal patterns, which make an interesting look, I think. It's just a little annoying to color (I paste in fractal patterns I find online, but part of it is to keep the patterns actually changing–at least I use a random number generator to help me determine skin color, but there are so many different fractal patterns out there that it's impossible to do so with that).
When drawing it, I realized I wanted to show visually that Julie is not a drinker. It informs her character: she never really goes out, and hasn't done some of the social things. But, unlike me, she can actually stomach the taste of alcohol–she just wasn't ready for the kick. Of course, that drink is an alcoholic Shirley Temple, so it has very little alcohol. She's that unused to alcohol.
Also, it seems Mindmistress has made a visit to Club 501, not realizing that the bar is the extent of the reality. She was interesting to draw, but fun. If you haven't read her comic, do so. Al Schroeder has created a hyper-intelligent character who is genuinely smart. I love cerebral stories, and Mindmistress can capture your attention as a superhero story even if a chapter doesn't involve any fisticuffs. Plus, she's snarky. Who doesn't love snark?
Tomorrow: Fractal's story

I seem to like drawing that expression. It's a nice "I'm shocked or just really interested" expression. Now, I need to stop procrastinating and color the next page so I can post it (well, I have to letter it, too). And then actually finish drawing the pages for the week. I thought I'd built up a buffer, too...

Silly Ave, you should have put up the link to Mindmistress's comic (and I don't understand how to edit the text once I've posted the comic--it formats weirdly). Also, Mindmistress can be found on Drunk Duck now! Her regular site can be found at http://mindmistress.comicgenesis.com and her Duck site, which is reposting all the old comics, can be found at http://www.drunkduck.com/Mindmistress_at_Drunk_Duck/ and will be updated daily until caught up!
