Bubbles are mandatory. Sorry if you don't like it. It's not that hard really, just draw a big box, then a black border. Put writing on it, give it a little tail and you're done!

I see someone other than me has GIMP! And I also see someone other than me's name is Kyle. But yeah, pretty cool so far. I like Kyle's sprites, too. But later when there's several characters it might be confusing to know who's who. So you might want to use textboxes, or put like a picture of the person next to the text to avoid confusion.

If you don't have em', people tell you to use them. If you continue to not use them, people stop reading because it hurts their eyes. Now, I don't see why you can't use them.
