I think Steve recognizes that the Siren is little more than a "paid thug" and that he can't get much meaningful info from a corpse, but wave a carrot like her beauty and long life in front of her and the next song she sings will end the concert for the Sea Hag. I hear no screams of agony... just removal of her greatest weapons with offer to improver her situation with cooperation.. I don't know about you, but seems awfully compassionate to me for what the situation is.

I'm with hkmaly here. He was told by this individual to kill his family. Compassion? Right. He's showing compassion in not just killing her horribly and then keeping her head alive and giving it to his boss to play with.
