Such an in depth review, made so I think by the differing opinions! and highly interesting to hear view points from someone with a greek background. All of TA's comics have greek culture embedded in them, but as I know nothing about greek culture I found it interesting to hear about how significant the stories are to someone who's family is from Greece. Ta is a great storyteller, I'm loving all the comics I've read of hers, havn't read Without Moonlight yet though :)

ElCid: Have you read Hitler Youth pamphlets? Early era requirements to joining the SS? I can understand that the particular thought process of the nazi guard is grotesque but I am very sad to ssay that much or not, that was the general rhetoric for them. And not because Hitler was a fan or kitsch either- because that wass the only way in which his troops would dehumanize people that were not in uniform, and treat them accordingly. But that's interesting an issue- the believability and plausibility of nazi motivation. I'm all game to discuss it, it is pretty hard to believe at times if it's not stripped down to methodology. (Take note I don't consider nazis as culturally/ethnically specific. The greek collaborator later on is just as nazi as his bosses) Can't you see what the motivations of the bad guys are in the comic? (so I know where to start :) )

And no I'm not saying you need to "nice up" the bad guys, but they should have believable and understandable motivations.

That whole opening scene, with the Nazi guy and the cigarette, and him pondering deep thoughts about his biological superiority... that was all a bit much!

El Cid: Bloodthirsty buffoons? I just took the average behavior of the particular occupational force as historically documented. What would you have me do? Make them look better on their behvaior to make them 'believable'? Anyway, the nazi vs. German issue isn't yet in the focus bt it will be. I'm impressed you think of the nazis as caricatured though, because I have actually toned down the ACTUAL historical accounts and photo footage. That there alone speaks volumes.

I've read that one already, and my opinion was definitely closer to Mike's. The dialogue needs a lot of work, and one thing that didn't get mentioned is that it actually caricatures the Nazis in an almost cartoony way, which really makes it hard for me to take the comic seriously. If you want to find some serious message in history, you do so by taking a hard, honest look at things, not by turning people you don't like into bloodthirsty buffoons. I did like the look of the comic, overall. The art isn't technically strong, but it works. And it's nice to get a story from this mostly ignored theater of the war. Aaaand... uh, that concludes my review of Without Moonlight! LOL!

Congrats on winning the award :) I do get the feeling the review is ...hm, how shall I put it? I'll take an example: The whole 'immature fit' Mike has problems with because Diomedes immediately concedes: you probably forget they are at war, have seen enough examples of what he's being scolded with to not fume or gripe. This is a pass/fail course, where fail is 'death'. If you throw drama queen fits you will end up killing yourself and your friends. Anyway, when I started this comic I knew it wouldn't be for everyone. I can't agree with most of Mike's views, but that's because I know where the story is getting and how the characters will unravel, and where their ACTUAL, and REALISTIC tests of character lie. As for the dialogue, well that being actually my professional art medium (the writing) for which I'm actually paid, I guess my style is what it is, and not for everyone. ;)

Holy moly, Lite bites won the DD award for best community project, it won the judges acclaim and by popular vote. The latter is satisfying as without any stats it is hard to tell what sort of an audience a comic has, well except for comments but many readers do not comment regularly.

I have to agree with NickyP opening comment regarding the mood/ambiance, having grown up on my grandmother's stories of her life in nazi occupied Paris.
