crossing the river styx was not a proper option as the waters were meant to be a defense of the underworld and prevent souls and other critters from getting out, the waters of the styx would wipe the soul clean, so if you did manage to make it across to the afterlife it wouldn't matter as you have effectively wiped yourself out of existance

@Darius Drake: actually.. the Greeks and many cultures put the coins in departed's mouth. The ferryman would reach into the soul's mouth to remove the coins himself, and get rather pissed if they were not there. As far as I can tell.. the putting the coins on the eyes thing is an invention of the screen and stage because of it being so hard to keep your eyes closed while playing dead.

I believe the Ferryman is Charon I may be wrong. The ferryman here who has not made an appearance yet is called either the ferryman or Captain. So far we have met the Pursur and the First Mate. Oh yes a Stewart but she just became a client so she doesn't count.

My underworld is at times a mess... but Has it bass in myth.. I can't spell the name of the boat man.. it means blessed.. Thanatos is God of merciful nonvilant death.in myth he is a child on nix and is kin to sleep.. not that clever just read to much ancient history and myth..

@ magicalmisfits: The coppers thing is, from what I remember, actually a thing in Greek Mythology. If I remember correctly, they buried their dead with two coins over their eyes so to pay the ferryman of the river of death (who I think was Thanatos). If they couldn't, they were typically stuck on the wrong side of one of the Underworld Rivers, and could only try to cross by swimming.
