Fatemaster: Suprisingly, Padmé Amidala is not only elected monarch. Elective monarchy predates the hereditary ones, with examples like the Roman Kingdom (before republic). Of course, you usually vote for King, not Prince (or, sometimes, you vote for which of Princes become King).
