#33 Timeless Snark
Evil Emperor Nick on Aug. 24, 2008
I apologize in advance but my work has really been getting more and more hectic lately so I might not be able to respond to all your comments for a while, or at the very least not in as timely a manner as I'd like to. I'm sorry about that but it really can't be helped. Most nights Amelius is using the computer to actually MAKE the comic so typically I answered comments from work, which I don't think I'll be able to do very much in the future.
I recently downloaded the Phantasy Star games from the Wii Virtual Console. Now many games are not as good as I remember them but luckily PS has aged well with me. PSIII: Generations of Doom is my favorite despite it being a mechanically weaker entry in the series. I really enjoyed PSIII's flavor, setting, story but most of all its unique generational system. It really let the game makers do a lot of things that games normally don't get the chance to do like show consequences over time or show you how people's lives played out rather than just write off happily ever after endings. Now it is a Sega Genesis era game so while it is lacking on the graphics and mechanical fronts in a lot of respects I still feel its strong points have aged well.
Although most people consider FF the classic series, since I never owned a super nintendo I grew with Phantasy Star & Shining Force instead and I do not feel the poorer for it. I still very much enjoy the series today and I am very much saddened that they abandoned the original series storyline, setting and game play in favor of its story light and clunky MMO counterpart PSO & PS-Universe and in all its variety of bland flavors. If sega is listening: people, stop with MMO's and make PSV. At the very least release PS Generation I & PS Generation II in the US so we can enjoy the graphical and game play updates to the series. Whereas Shining Force has also taken a turn for the suckier as the new entires are LAME action based games with RPG elements rather than the classic SRPGs of the Sega era at least the excellent SRPG games from Nippon Ichi such as Disgaea or Soul Nomad have filled the niche left by the fall of classic series like Ogre Battle & Shining Force but I've yet to find an RPG series that has taken up the excellent legacy that is Phantasy Star.

Onasaki at 2:49AM, Sept. 11, 2008
Ho crap, I didn't comment. Evil Elves are fun.
Tabitha at 5:47PM, Sept. 7, 2008
an EXCELLENT point! plus, there's plenty of time to sow the seeds of world domination. If you don't have to worry about becoming old and weak, you can take the time to set up your empire

SeriousQuiche: But totally justified right? ZeroVX: Just 2 & 3 so far but 4 is listed as a future download. Zephyrion: Yes but sadly she'll still fail the test on today's lesson. Archangel: We would have lots of well educated students with low self esteam. Rina_ran: He looks into the future so he can have snark ready in advance. :p Reitei: To be fair while he lived through the Warlock's War he did not fight in it as the Elves were neutal in that one for the most part. Chameleon Kid: Woot! Anonymous: Well hopefully you'll like his next outfit better. Luffy91: It has its moments...or so I'm told. Milky: Probably. Twilight_of_the_gods: Yes. I admite I have a very similar record when dealing with children who think they can peddle snark. There was a similar exchange between myself and some kid after Strongbad's web comic episode came out. When this failed to put the child in his place I moved on to something closer to how Willam Black dealt with snarky kids in Mallrats. Tabitha: Granted but on the plus side eventually you would have to win the lottery. Haly K: Thanks for the understanding. Hopefully one day I'll be doing this as my job instead of what I do now and I'll be free to respond to people durring working hours. Kaede Higuchi: She'll get over it with therapy. DoodlestheBear: It was red when the school gave it to him. Kessy is one of the older girls in the class. I dislike giving out exact ages so that is all I'm going to say. SarahN: Its okay if you have mad skillz or just skills you get mad at either way we still apreciate your comment. ghostrunner: How hard old games has a lot to do with that too. Back in the day I just though I sucked because I couldn't beat Castlevania I, now I realize that it is just insanely hard and not really that fun so I stick with more enjoyable entries in the series like III. Ka_rin: Mwahahahahaha...er yes I agree. telruya & kaleygeminni: Indeed. DarkStarZN: Actually that is Mira and I think you'll find she is less like Phineas then her looks would suggest. We tried to make all the characters here their own thing rather then just recolord charby characters even if they still share some visuals. Insizwa & XXX_NightWing & Frost: Thanks. TheTim: You should look into Nippon Ichi games. They still know how to make a good SRPG. Sadly regular RPGs are largely a baren wasteland of bland right now. Eirikr: Well the quality and consistency has gone way down but I did like Ghost Squad. Sadly I can't think of anything else to point out that was remotely enjoyable lately from Sega. It seems all they want to do now is milk sonic for all he is worth.

A new good PS game would be good, but you forget the #1 rule of Post-Dreamcast Sega, and that is this: SEGA can no longer make good games. Think about it, have they made any truly quality SEGA titles since Dreamcast died, aside from the ones not made by sega? Odds a a new PS title that is good is probably pretty low, sadly. Oh and good page.

Also, Phantasy Star and Shining Force rock. Hard. Like the D. That action game is not a Shining Force game! I don't care what it's called. And Phantasy Star Online at least fits a bit, but I will agree that they desperately need a new entry into the series. I found the Grandias (especially Grandia II)and Skies of Arcadia to be great RPGs (I'm really not a huge fan of the Final Fantasy games, but they're still good). Unfortunately, the way RPGs are going, I'm not sure there will ever be another game that can replicate the awesome of Phantasy Star. Maybe on a portable, like the DS?
TheTim at 5:07PM, Aug. 28, 2008
Wow. That's a great way to put that! Never have I experienced such a good come back to immortals being older than dirt! Then again, he obviously had a lot of time to think of that. I haven't mentioned this in a while, but this is a good example, so I'd like to take this opportunity to mention how consistently amazing your facial expressions are! Foreground and background! Just incredible.
frost at 2:42PM, Aug. 28, 2008

i'm re-running through the phantasy star games myself right now. actually i'm surprised at the number of games i simply cant sit through and play any more because i developed an extremely short attention span
SarahN at 6:34PM, Aug. 25, 2008
And lo' and behold my crappy coding skillz below.
SarahN at 6:32PM, Aug. 25, 2008

DoodlestheBear at 5:28PM, Aug. 25, 2008
Why is the end of his pokey stick red? And she did deserve that. A lot. Also, how old is she in comparison to the other kids? The ones behind her look much younger. (I do know they're all different ages, but still, I'm just curious)
Kaede Higuchi at 4:50PM, Aug. 25, 2008
Ouch. That gotta hurt.
SonicEdge7 at 4:24PM, Aug. 25, 2008
