The definition of manga: comic. It's Japanese. And your camp councilers are wrong. Manga was invented by a person who hisself used many different styles of it. Today, there are so many branches that there is no one defined "manga style".
In short, manga is its own thing. It's all in the chins and eyes.

did you know the bubblecup crisis manga was American? and then the Japaneses made it into an anime.
really the manga style isn't much different from comic style, imo.
I mean, its easy to tell the difference, (which is usually in the eye's, and the way they dress) and the fact that manga is almost never in colour, and comics usually are.
