The Baku that you see in the thought bubble is kinda close to what Baku's original design looked like. He looked more like a real tapir and had some more accessories. I've always said though that Baku is more or less the Pikachu of the series, and if I'd gone with that design…yeah, I could have done it. But it'd be more like if Ash started with a Rhyhorn instead of a Pikachu.
And also, the history of the Baku here is accurate according to my sources…which is totally not Wikipedia, I promise >_>

I'd ask for Baku to pick me up some Beef Lo Mein.........but the little git would probably eat it before he brought it to me.

I'm only familiar with Baku from the Monster Rancher (a.k.a. Monster Farm in Japan) series of games, and the movie Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer outside of your webcomic, so I don't care how accurate you are or not, just whether this Baku is a good character or not... and he is.
