Experiments seem to indicate that people are capable of causing pain in others, but are often much more capable of doing so if there's some sort of ‘detachment’ (Pushing a button to shock someone is easier to do that causing pain directly with one's own hand). When authority figures are involved, one's ability to inflict pain, distressingly, increases. It's a part of our hardwiring, it seems, that I find repugnant.
In any case, it's not necessarily easy to choke the life out of someone directly, but less direct means may be more palpable. I'd just as soon have none of the situations put themselves upon me. I don't want to test how strong my will is to ‘do the right thing’.
*sigh* Thanks for reading…
