Alright… I feel like I took a step back in lots of ways, what with foregoing color, but I felt like it was just really getting away from me, making my detail and dynamic action suffer, so… I punted!
.
For a little while I'm gonna try a lot more pen art, with liquid black watercolor highlights (that scan bluish). I really like the greater contrast - it seems to ‘pop’ more! It's a style heavily inspired by SingRings' The Cull although I don't do him justice - man that is one talented artist!!
.
Meanwhile, what in the world is Eli doing??!!
.
Thanks for Reading Everyone!

such an aweome page...wait is that plymayer?!?!
KimLuster at 4:29AM, April 21, 2015
@ghosty: that's what I said...! :D
ghostrunner at 8:56PM, April 20, 2015
its alright everyone, go back to what you were doing, he's just offering a big helping hand
KimLuster at 8:24AM, April 20, 2015
@Barry: Thank you! I have no doubt I'll try to incorporate color again at some point, hopefully while maintaining the more vibrant look this style seems to give me...!! Then again, maybe I won't :D
BarryCorbett at 7:49AM, April 20, 2015
I like this treatment much better! Really nice, and panel breakdowns are just great. I like the close-ups in the first panel and the action in the last panel.
KimLuster at 4:48AM, April 20, 2015
@plymayer: Thanks!!
plymayer at 11:06PM, April 19, 2015
Even more exciting than the last page!
KimLuster at 7:01PM, April 19, 2015
@Peipei: Yeah it's double-dire now!
KimLuster at 7:00PM, April 19, 2015
@Szyszka: Thank you! Okay no killing of good characters - how about seriously maiming?!! ;)
Peipei at 6:41PM, April 19, 2015
How gut wrenching it must be to have a family and friends to have to worry about in a time like this. I hope Kim can do something about this before someone near and dear has to die...
Szyszka666 at 1:47PM, April 19, 2015
It looks really good in grayscale :) Brighter and more sharp. And I love the dynamics of this page, especially the last panel. Please don't kill any good characters in upcoming scenes!
KimLuster at 11:02AM, April 19, 2015
@Singring: thanks so much!! I find this style indeed does save some (much needed) time - and I feel like I can better get the action and poses I want better. This is, essentially, now pen art, with black (bluish) watercolor shadows and highlights!!
Singring at 10:31AM, April 19, 2015
Thanks for the shout-out and compliment on the last page! I'll throw it right back atcha: this is some really sweet artwork - I really like the expressive faces and dynamic panels. Some of this reminds me of the classic cover of the first King Crimson record. I know I'm biased (;D), but I think they monochrome shading really comes off well! Did you find it saves you some time or helps you get your vision onto the page a bit better?
KimLuster at 7:41PM, April 17, 2015
@bravo: indeed it is supposed to be shatter-proof, but I kinda theorized that debris from the 'copter weakened the window and Eli finished it off. Truly though, I think something Eli's size could probably get through it any way (not sure how the shatter patterns would work though... anyway). The unbreakable aspect will come up next page... As for the blue tinge - I kinda like it the more I look at it... what do you think?
bravo1102 at 7:25PM, April 17, 2015
That glass was supposed to be shatter proof. Guess they didn't take Eli into account. Go outside, go into a vault, how about call in an Arc light raid and flatten the whole grid square? I have to agree with Fallopiancursader. Scan it on grey-scale to get rid of that blue tinge.
KimLuster at 12:19PM, April 17, 2015
@tupapayon: she's hears you!!
tupapayon at 12:09PM, April 17, 2015
I may be wrong, but things might be getting chaotic (I know, I'm good at pointing out the obvious)… now Kimber has to decide her move… go get him!
KimLuster at 11:10AM, April 17, 2015
@Sky: lol... and on the grave a sub-epitaph "...and never satisfied!" 'Wrestling and Writhing': what a perfect way to describe my struggle - it shall certainly be my undoing!! As for what Eli is doing - I doubt he's going to tell us! Probably not good, though... Glad you like it!!
skyangel at 10:54AM, April 17, 2015
Truly terrifying, especially that last panel!!! I'm also curious to know what's going through Eli's mind right now and what his focus of attention is on. Maybe it's just the way you've posed the characters in the last panel but something makes me think it may be the child. As for the new style colouring, I think on your gravestone it should say 'She was always restless!' lol Ever since I started reading this I've noticed you wrestling and writhing with your process. I don't find that unhealthy though as I respect anyone who has the courage to keep trying new ideas and your variations never make drastic changes to the way it reads. I do love this page and as you say yourself it does seem to make the seperate images pop more. This actually reminded me of one of those effects they sometimes use in movies where the viewer is going into shock and the heart races faster while the brain tries to keep up! XD
KimLuster at 7:29AM, April 17, 2015
@FC: I'll just have to emphasize to everyone that this doesn't represent a break... I'll probably reintroduce color later on, but I dunno... I really like the contrasts here - it just feels more dynamic!! I also kind of like the bluish tint the liquid watercolor has... It's supposed to be black but doesn't render that way... Finally, Caleb is a Total Jerk, but he's also trying to maintain control while his world is crumbling around him, so I should cut him some slack... Nah, I won't! :D
fallopiancrusader at 7:09AM, April 17, 2015
Boy, that Caleb is a smooth guy: First his team makes some grossly irresponsible decisions, then when the monster goes berserk, he blames someone else for it. The greyscale looks cool. The only thing I worry about is that one cliche of film is to go black and white to indicate some sort of break, like a flashback or dream, and your change to greyscale might come across like that, too. If your scanner has a greyscale setting, it should eliminate the blue tint, but I don't mind it.
