Glad you all liked it. shastab24 - I never got the I before E thing, but then my first name is Keith which doesn't follow that rule (because it's Welsh, not English). aqua 77 - H. Beam Piper had a great bit on the development of English. I can't remember the whole thing, but ended with line "it's what Norse barbarians made up to get dates with Celtic barmaids."

Another English rule that has made people think school was trying to make their brains self-destruct: "I before E, except after C", and then they send you off to science class.
