And we begin chapter 3, with the onset of the reprisals, exactly as Eichel's orders stipulated.

On the family's bickering issue- the occasion of buying food in the black market for gold, jewelry and other precious things families owned, was standard practice. And often the food was very low quality or spoilt. But it was better than nothing during the time of the famine. Just so you can get the context of the quarrel this family had started on.
