There are WAY too many threads put in the form of a question!

Anyway, 80's POP ANTHEMS!! What songs defined that era? Eh? Eh?
I'm listening to a few on my headphones right now… I'll list ‘em in the time honoured boring fashion, but it’d be nice to see what others think about them and see their choices you know?

Only 80's pop BTW! Nothing obscure, B-sides, whatever, just 80's pop hits!

Ok, here are some:

* Together in Electric Dreams, Giorgio Moroder & Phil Oakey
* Run to Paradise, The Choirboys (Australian hit)
* Addicted to Love, Robert Palmer
* Simply Irresistible, Robert Palmer
* Dance Hall Days, Wang Chung
* Hymn to Her, The Pretenders
* Rosana, Toto
* Africa, Toto
*Vienna, Ultra Vox
*Tainted Love, Soft Cell
*I want to Know What Love is, Foreigner
*The Safety Dance, Men Without Hats
*Tonight She Comes, The Cars
*Is She Really Going Out With Him?, Joe Jackson
*Close To Me, The Cure
*I'm Still Standing, Elton John
*You're The Voice, John Farnham
*Time after Time, Cyndy Lauper
*What's love got to do with it?, Tina Turner
*All Fired Up, Pat Benatar

There you go. There's not much meat there, it's all sugar and fairyfloss (cotton-candy to you Yanks). Do you remember, know any of those? Could you suggest anymore? QUESTIONS!

are you implying that I was born in an era defined by Foreigner's “I wanna know what love is”?

Pass the suicide plz.

NO WAY! :P
That's not what I meant… Not the meanings of the songs. They're just stupid pop songs afterall. I mean: “pick a good pop theme tune”. Jebus, how hard could it be?

Jump by VanHalen? :)

ahhh… what about yello? I don't know the title… I think it's oh yeah… or at least what it's more commonly known as.

Oh Yeah… Oh Yeah… Oh Yeah
The moon… beautiful
The sun… even more beautiful
Oh Yeah… Oh Yeah… Oh Yeah

Beautiful
Oh Yeah… Oh Yeah…

Good time

That song is the 80's defined.
“To a rational mind, nothing is inexplicable. Only unexplained.”

Oh yeah… It was called Oh yeah :P
I still occasionally play it, I hated it it when it first came out, but it grew on me.
Nawww… it's a bit esoteric for a pop anthem though.

Chka-chkaaa! …mmm bo bo
Chka-chkaaa!

Thriller - Michael Jackson
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) - Christopher Cross (I think that's who sang it?)
You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey
Broken Wings - Mr. Mister
Mr. Roboto - Styx
Venus - Bananarama
Walk Like an Egyptian - Bananarama
We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel
You May Be Right - Billy Joel

..I actually still listen to a few of them. I like 80's music. lol!

Nice call on the Cars, Toto and Foreigner, Oz. Foreigner, especially. Also props to Silent Kitty for mentioning Bananarama, “Mr. Roboto” and the “We Didn't Start The Fire”. Also also, props to Mags for mentioning the theme to Ferris Bueller's Day Off (an ‘80s cinematic masterpiece).

I’ll add:

The Go-Gos - “Vacation”
Europe - “The Final Countdown”
The Tom-Tom Club - “Genius Of Love”
Gary Numan - “Cars”
John “Cougar” Mellencamp - “Jack And Diane”, “Pink Houses”
Ratt - “Round And Round”
Thomas Dolby - “She Blinded Me With Science”
Don Henley - “The End Of The Innocence”, “New York Minute”
Asia - “Heat Of The Moment”
Chicago - “You're The Inspiration”
Journey - everything they ever recorded, ever

…Yyyyeah. The ‘80s wasn’t so hot a decade for music. It did give us the Flaming Lips and They Might Be Giants, though, so I guess that's OK.

Kenny Loggins - “Danger Zone”
A Flock Of Seagulls - “Space Age Love Song” & “I Ran”
Blondie - “Dreaming”
Depeche Mode - “Just Can't Get Enough”
Def Leppard - “Pour Some Sugar On Me”
New Order - “Blue Monday”, “Bizarre Love Triangle”, “True Faith” and countless others
Lionel Richie - “Hello”
Modern English - “I Melt With You”
Thompson Twins - “Hold Me Now”
Joe Esposito - “You're The Best” (omg Karate Kid)

Seriously, how did no one mention New Order before me? They practically defined the 80s electronic music scene.

Its so funny that this came up because Ive been listening to 80s Weekend on the radio while Im at work and even got my boyfriend doing the same. I guess I just kinda got tired of today's bleak music and needed a bit more synth to brighten it up..

Anyhoo, here are some other songs not mentioned they play often on that radio station that I remembered from my youth.

Tommy TuTone - 8675309 Jenny
The J. Geils Band - Centerfold
The Fixx - Saved By Zero
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Shout
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (Rocky!)
sade - smooth operator
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
Robert Palmer - I didn't mean to turn you on
Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done To Deserve This, West End Girls
Billy Ocean - Caribbean Queen
Blondie - The Tide Is High
Thompson Twins - Doctor Doctor
The Human League - Don't You Want Me, Fascination
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy (This song actually got back in the top 100 in the 90's almost ten years later thanks to being featured in a Ninja Turtle's movie)
ABC - Poison Arrow
Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes
After the Fire - Der Kommissar
Aha - Take On Me
Bananarama - Cruel Summer (OMG more Karate Kid, lol)
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Right Round
Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
Nena - 99 Luft Balloons
Romantics - Talking In Your Sleep
The Bangles - Manic Monday
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax
Hall and Oates - Maneater
Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl

Gah! There's so many -.-

I am FS2 champion! w00t!!

Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night
Timbuk 3 - The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades

Prince - Little Red Corvette

Well, if we're posting videos, then let's not forget about Phil Collins.

Whether alone or with his prog-turned-pop-friendly band Genesis, he produced a wellspring of cheese-laden yet catchy ‘80s pop songs, including “Invisible Touch”, “Sussudio”, “Two Hearts”, and the rather topical “Land of Confusion”, which would probably have been forgotten in the cassette deck of history had it not been for its bizarre music video:

Lol, outdated pop culture references.

I can’t say I'm really one way or another about Phil Collins, but I do like the ‘80s version of Genesis a little more than the ’80s version of the Police.

That video scares me >.>
but then again, so does Phil Collins…

Here's an amusing video I saw recently:

Its just so ridiculous that its funny.. The Romantics also did “What I like about You” which was more popular and well-known.

No Culture Club or Huey Lewis and the News?
Or Men at Work?

Yeah, despising Phil Collins is nothing more than a meme. He's just a target for a very easy “non-thinking” application of group-thought taste. Now early 90's Elton John is TRUE EVIL! …not to mention 90's Aerosmith and Bonjovi… that decade lobotomised them.

Land of confusion was a great vid. How come Sledge hammer beat it? WTF? Stop motion video is time consuming but hardly amazing… not even for back then (not by a long shot). I remember thinking I'd seen clever stuff on Sesame Street (most of which had been done in the 70's).

-edit-
hahaha! Great vid!

I LOVE that freaky hair! Bouffant… Actually the drummer has groovy 80's rocker hair, the other guys have… jebus… aleins on their heads?

Not a bad song… it grows on you ^_^

WOW, I had never seen the Land of Confusion video before. That is bizarre, although I absolutely love the song (however, I am not too keen on the recent Disturbed remake of it).

I don't think I'll ever get that Phil Collins puppet out of my head.. lol!

Here goes a few more pop anthems from the 80's:

In Your Eyes- Peter Gabriel
Forever Young- Alphaville
The Promise- When In Rome (I think that's the name of the group).
Love Shack- The B-52's
Photograph- Def Leppard
People Are People- Depeche Mode
Beds Are Burning- Midnight Oil
Hungry Like The Wolf, The Reflex, Union of the Snake- Duran Duran

And last but not least, I lower my head in shame for actually remembering this one.

Putting on the Ritz- Taco
Karen's Edge- The beginning of the wildest road trip ever!!
How Unfortunate- Coming back in mid-July!

David Bowie - “Fame”, “Let's Dance”
Bow Wow Wow - “I Want Candy”
Simple Minds - “Don't You Forget About Me”
Eddie Murphy - “Party All The Time”
Duran Duran - “Rio”
Eurythmics - “Sweet Dreams”
Devo - “Whip It”

What's great about this thread for me is that my fashion is currently HUGELY influenced by the 80s new wave scene. Right down to the “Risky Business” dance scene style Ray Bans.
I <3 80s

My boyfriend loves that song!

Also, if anyone is interested, the radio station here that plays 80s weekend offers their broadcast online. You can click here to listen to 80s music starting tonight at midnight (US eastern time zone) through 11:59pm Sunday night.
I wouldnt recommend it now though.. Its generally a pretty horrible station any other time.

In the meantime, enjoy another cheezy video for another cheezy 80s hit!
Poison Arrow by ABC

And I dunno about this one (I Ran by Flock of Seagulls)… The singer acts/looks like he's, well, “special”

Yike! I thought I was the only person on the planet to remember that one. I had to explain the movie (and my obsession with it) to my boyfriend. Having been 4 at the time it was released (yes, I am a cradle snatcher 8D ), I guess I can understand that. Still, awesome song and movie. :)

And yes, I know all those songs. Althougth sometimes I wish I didn't…

And Tainted Love was way, way better after Marilyn Manson got his hands on it! 8D *puurrrrr*

There is only two songs.

A-ha - Take on Me
Toto - Africa

I guarantee that they have both already been said, but I don't care. :)

…don't king away…i'll know what a' to say i'll say it anyway…

Is it wrong for a 16 year old to know all the words to an 80's pop song.

…I of course mean 18 Ozone…*cough*
Please, please, you give me too little credit.

Have we just entirely forgotten the Eurythmics here? And their video for “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”?

I especially like the little bridge part where there are a bunch of shots that fade to blue photographs, including one of a horse. And then they kick into the (bejeweled-masked) band members playing cellos to a part in the song that sounds almost nothing like cellos. Still, though, I kid because I care.

Hahaha Bekefel, no more NSFW for you ;)
Oh yeah, SImple minds ^^
And Eurythmics! I bought a DVD with all their greatests on it. Annie Lennox is a hottie. ^^

That flock of Seagulls guy is bizarre… He Still looks the same, except without the crazy hair.

Has anyone said Gary Numan's Cars? Just on 1980…
Thank god no one's mentioned WHAM… although at one point I did actually like “Wake me up before you go-go”.
Does anyone know The Eurogliders? They came from my little city to make it big around the world, My fave hit from them was “Heaven”.
And “Do Re Mi” (with Deborah Conway) - Man Overboard.
Great 80's hits, But I don't know if they were as big internationally.
I didn't much like Manson's Tainted love… he's a bit too obvious, But then it's an old song, I think the first version my have been by Gloria Brown (Marc Bolan's wife) in the 70's, but she didn't write it so someone may have done it before her :)

Tac's version of Put'in on the RItz was indeed a little retro classic! ^^
Um, another cool quintessentially 80's rock electronica hit- Nick Kershaw's “Wouldn't it be good”

How about Cameo's Word up? Massively good fimclip, hahaha! It is just SO 80's!
Some horrible visual acting from the fishfaced police detective but Larry Blackmon's hair, moustache and bright red codpiece are style sensations! Not to mention the shoulderpadded leather jacket and full body Lycra leotard. He's a god.

I'm assuming rock is acceptable- Def Leppard has already been mentioned twice. Anyway, my list is kinda short- I was born in 1992 . ;P

Journey - “Don't Stop Believin'”
Def Leppard - “Rock of Ages”
Aerosmith - “Love In An Elevator”
Twisted Sister - “I Wanna Rock”
Quiet Riot - “Come On Feel The Noise”
Bon Jovi - “Livin' On A Prayer”
Judas Priest - “You Got Another Thing Comin'”
Van Halen - “Panama”
Scorpion - “Rock You Like A Hurricane”
Rush - “Subdivisions”
Warrant - “Cherry Pie” (It came out in 1990, true, but it sounds '80s to me)
It's a comic!

LOLOL LAMFAO
