A word to the wise isn't necessary; it's the stupid ones who need the advice.

But only the wise will listen; they say “a word to the wise” because it's the fools who will ignore it :)

Maybe it's ‘a word to the wise’ because only fools will listen since only a fool thinks they're wise.

But it is the wisest man who seeks wisdom.

Actually, you're misunderstanding the meaning of the phrase. It's not an introduction to a word of wisdom, but an introduction to a phrase that only a select few would understand (i.e., those who are wise to some bit of knowledge that others are not).

Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.

A wise man knows his ignorance. A fool thinks he knows everything.

Mark Twain
Never argue with an idiot, he drags you down to his level and defeats you with his superior experience at being an idiot.

Mark Twain
Never debate an idiot, the onlookers will have trouble telling the difference.

Never debate a fool, they are too ignorant to know they're wrong and too stubborn to ever admit it.

H.L. Mencken quoted by Martin Gardner
“One belly laugh is worth a thousand syllogisms”

Crazy man @_@

Stokely: In an insane society, the sane man must appear insane.
Harvey Holroyd: Where'd you get that?
Stokely: Star Trek.

Harvey Holroyd: God, I miss that show.

but perfectly reasonable. in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. but ultimately he is alone. so is it wiser to adapt to the culture of fools or to remain the only one wise?

also, just because you know that you know nothing really doesn't make you wise. its how you continue on accepting this while living that proves your wisdom. giving the possibility for all perspectives and keeping many perspectives on all possibilities and what nots.

Wisdom is weird. That's why you have to use that thing on top of your neck for more than a hat rack. The more you do, the less weird it seems. But it's still weird

Mark Twain
Always do right it gratifies some people and amazes the rest

Mark Twain
You can take a hungry dog in, feed it and raise it to prosperity and it will not turn and bite you. This is the difference between a man and a dog.

And of course:

Winston Churchill
I would never quote myself, it takes a certain kind of arrogance to think I can improve on the wisdom of those who came before me.
