Dammit! You beat me to it! I just downloaded all the Afro episodes, and it is without a doubt one of the baddest series out today. It just sux that there are only 5 episodes. But i guess it's understandable when you remember that each episode cost around 1 million dollars to make. I also got the soundtrack which is pretty badass in itself. I'd recommend this to any anime or action fan.

I thought the action scenes were cool, but character development? Not there. Annoying sidekicks also. Basically it was cool looking, but nothing more. Kind of like Ninja Scroll.

Also we ALREADY have a thread about this.

Except Ninja Scroll had good character development in addition to having good action.

Afro Sam was basically a waste of a good 5 million bucks.

I was hoping it would redeem itself with the last episode. Nope. What was I thinking?

Question: Why did Mr.Cowboy not just keep the #2 headband 10 years ago?

Samurai Champloo's biggest problem was that it had no unifying story that created tension and expectation. As a result it was just 3 ppl wandering the countryside. Sure there's nothing wrong with that, and classic movies have been based off of less of a premise. But SC didn't handle it too well. Other than that, it's a good series in terms of action, characterization, and innovation.

There were about 2 episodes, other than the final arc of 2 episodes, that were really good. The one where Mugen fought a guy who used Chinese chi attacks, and the one where Jin fell in love. Those 2 stick in my mind. All the others were okay to good.

Cowboy Bebop is still better as a series, however. The key is that (1)it had a unifying story centered around Spike, (2)it had characterization episodes on all the characters. SC didn't have enough of either.

As far as Afro Samurai goes, am I the only one that noticed that Osuru didn't grow up along with Jino and Afro? When Afro was a kid, she was too; when Afro was a teenager, she was still a kid. WTH?

I'm pretty sure other people noticed. But c'mon, it's AFRO SAMURAI. It's not supposed to make sense in any form.

I just wish they had spent that 5 million beautifully animating something with plot. But I guess hip hop psuedo-culture really sells or something. Especially to white anime fans.

Im a crazy fan of many cartoons… and yes, big anime addict..
With that said, Im also a strict critic and its not easy to impress me..
Soooooo…
I could barely watch 5 minutes of this. Fancy animation (and some pan sequences were horrible) cant make up for a crap story that tries too desperately hard to appeal to pop culture..

I am FS2 champion! w00t!!

Sadly I missed AS on TV when it was on. Regardless of what everyone thinks of it, I'm STILL buying it on DVD when it comes out and I get a chance simply because it has friggin' Sam Jackson voicing the lead character!
