This may really be my bad. Awhile ago, I actually asked somebody, ‘what would Japanese sound like, with a French accent.’

There's nothing wrong with that. If he wants to sing that, kudos to him. He probably knows not everyone will take such an entry seriously but I say people should be supportive. It takes a LOT of guts to sing in ANY competition, especially a song from an anime.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Let him sing what he wants.
