I said “….seriously if they were illegal why would they have whole stores dedicated to them?”

I questioned just how deep his pervert like nature goes….he just looked away.
But to settle the issue once and for in the best way possible (the wonderful internet)…would you please make it clear to him that they are not illegal by shoving it in his face?

Adult material in itself is not illegal.
It's illegal if:
It's owned by a minor(bought by and sold to).
The depiction and presence of minors in adult situation and or of sexual nature.
And things like that.

Adult comics aren't illegal. The content and the owner can definitively be.

Speaking of stores dedicated to that sort of thing, the manga section of the last Books-A-Million I went to was made up of almost nothing but 18+ yaoi for some reason. Entire shelves of it. It was really bizarre!

I couldn't find a single title from any of the totally common series I buy, just strangely obscure 18+ yaoi. How can the demand be high enough?

While I don't do an adult comic, I've handled adult content, It's just never seen, only suggested. Today I showed a guy looking longingly at an underage hooker and it made me feel like I needed one of those showers they give you when you've been exposed to potentially lethal radiation. Though I think you need to have actually corrupted a child for it to be illegal, (photographing compromised minors or exposing them to adult material) I read somewhere that there are people who fake child pornography with photoshop or whatever to sidestep these laws and that the jury is still out on that.

Certainly if drawing child pornography was illegal there would be a steady stream of hentai animators and artists heading to prison… the stuff people are always trying to show me seem to feature girls in school uniforms… and girls who are at or above the legal age generally don't go to schools where there is a uniform. While you could argue semantics of there being a lot of 18 year old girls still finishing highschool/secondary school, I'd have to argue that it's implied the girls are younger to cater to the “deflowering fantasy” crowd.
