i think for fun you should add some more catagories. Like…best comic with animals

most likely to get published

best stickman comic.

Something fun like that.

If you can get a few more catagories people can relate with, then you will be able to get more people to join I think. But it is your contest man. I am excited about it and can't wait

I suggest major catagories like you know, all that standard stuff, then having some ‘Fun’ catagories that dont nessescarily reward skill, good wiriting or fancy artwork but instead reward some really random things Examples:

Most warped comic (awarded to the comic that would be most likley to get the athour locked up in a lunatic asylum)

Most likley to cause siezures ( this can include horrfying use of colour, terrible tone effects and anything that just plain hurts to look at)

Most likley to upset children or the elderly (pretty self explainatory)

Prolific use of decapitation (the comic with the most/best decapitation)

Best use of MSpaint in a comic ( only comics made with MS paint are eligable, best one wins)
Of course you will. All intelligent beings dream. Nobody knows why.

Also, tell random people they are awsome! it helps!

-Most original sprite comic

-Most detailed drawing

-Most improved since the beginning of the comic

-Least Hiatus'

They're just my ideas on what should be rewarded

Best Art
Best Story
Best Character Design
Longest unbroken updating streak
Best Male Character
Best Female Character
Best Villain
Best Page Layout
#1 Hunk
#1 Babe

Categories to consider for main awards:
Overall, Strip
Overall, Novel
Action
Comedy
Slice-of-Life
Drama
Pure Manga (comics that purposely follow manga formats, not “look kind of manga-ish”)
Sprite
Clip Art (photos, clip art and such)

I wouldn't recommend we do TOO MANY awards though, or we risk diluting the whole thing. Also, we need official graphics for the awards that proud authors can post on their site.

I would really like to “fun” awards but i don't think those are serious enough for this part of the awards. I think that should be done a little time after the serious awards are done.

The problem with character awards, great idea, but there's the problem of searching that comic for that character and staying focused on just him/her for the award.

I dunno, being able to write good characters is a pretty important part of a comic. I've read some where all the characters look and act the same way and they're pretty boring.

What about something like ‘DD Underdog’, ‘Best quote" or ’Most improved'?

This is for comic characters though, isn't it? Captain Manly was who I was talking about.

Is it really necessary to quote people quoting things?
anyways, I think I agree with Hawk.

YES! A parody of the DD awards!

Or maybe a three tier thing.

1st Tier: Normal DD awards: All the generic awards that are serious. Best Art, best story, stuff like that. Those would be enterede into the Best comic thing.

2nd Tier: Starving DD awards: Catogeries for those who aren't as good as 1st tier, but still in need of credit, like ‘best reference’, ‘underduck’ or ‘best quote’

3rd Tier: Sober Duck awards: A parody of the two awards. “Comic most likely to spontaniously combust”, “Most generically random” or “Best use of pottery in a comic”.

that'll be good, but first i think we need to get everything for the “first tier” done.
Oh, and im putting Most Improved on the list

Suzi made the suggestion to me to change the genre categories to the one's you choose from the DD menu. Personally i thought it was a great idea but just wanted to get some feedback first. And if we do do that then, could somebody explain the difference between Reality and Real Life, and Abstract and Other? to me those mean the same thing.

Actually, that would be the problem I'd have with using those categories as the basis for an award. The categories are kind of arbitrary. We might be better off using genres, like for books - sci fi, fantasy, horror, diary/autobiographical, real life?

I'm guessing that Real life involves the Author as a character experience events and so with his/her friends/foes. An example would be mine or Comic of Randomness

Reality would about a made up person in this world. Culture Shock?

Abstract is the artwork I think. I'm thinking stylised, or at least identifiable, but doesn't depict objects like they are in the real world. Maybe like DeaTh PlAys CheSs

Others would be like using photos. Robot Chuck me thinks.

Hmm. This is quite hard to think out. We need help.

Agreeing with the custom site design award. Perhaps a People's Choice award? That can be the one award that's decided upon by popular vote.

I'm kinda iffy with the idea of random silly awards. It's nice to have a few but if you have too much, then it either becomes too silly or it seems like an excuse to give everyone an award.

We'll have to make sure there's a fair criteria set out for best newcomer, too. :) Since that would need slightly different rules than the regular awards- maybe it can't have more than 50 pages or something.

What if the authour just churns out pages incredibly quickly? how many pages a comic has dosent accuratley reflect how new it is, how long it has been going for and the authours prior experience should be what decides wether something is a newcomer or not. the trouble is working out a system for that.
Of course you will. All intelligent beings dream. Nobody knows why.

Hmm. some minor subclasses that could be used could involve best quotes with : Best wittiness, Best evil foreboding, Best plot development, etc.
As for the criteria for best newcomer, we would have to determine exactly when they joined Drunkduck, as well as how new they have to be to be considered a ‘newcomer’.
What if they are simply someone who used to be here, but came back after a little time taken off to improve drawing or something?

One question would be whether we would be using the person as the newcomer, (for example, if mimarin had just joined) or if we use the newest comic (but this would allow the pros to steal this, by just making a new one for the contest.)

Once we determine the amount of time a person is considered a newcomer, the only thing I can think of would be to ask them when they joined, without telling them what the elligibility for this section would be. Unless you guys know of a way to check how long they've been here, or at what date they joined up with DD…
(edit) what if some jerk just makes a new one to steal the award from those who truly deserve to be able to get it??? THAT woud suck.

I'm starting to lean toward ‘new comic’ instead of ‘newcomer’ - after all, we aren't supposed to be judging the people, just the comic. It's like making an award saying ‘best comic done by a black guy.’ It's kind of an arbitrary way of limiting the amount of people who can submit their comic. A newcomer is going to have a new comic, so if the comic is good enough to win ‘best newcomer’ it's good enough to win ‘best new comic’ too.

Checking the date of the comic is easy enough (assuming they don't have a site elsewhere and are just reposting their old pages here), but I don't know how we would check if someone is really a ‘newcomer’ without relying on lots of honesty, which people on DD don't always have (honest mistakes aside). We don't have a way of checking when a user account was made, nor much of a way to see if they have any other accounts. Someone could just create a new username and start posting a comic and we wouldn't know if they're a newcomer or not.
