Conservative or Liberal?

I like some stuff about each side and I think the world needs both kinds. Though I like to think I'm in the middle, in comparisons I'd probably be a little conservative. But I'm a lot more liberal than all the conservatives around me.

I believe I've become more conservative in my old age. In high school and college I was much more liberal than today.

Strangly enough a lot of people told me they like the liberal leaning of my strip, which I don't see or do on purpose. Maybe there's a liberal still deep inside me and only subconsciously comes out when I'm drawing.

That said, I do try to strike some kind of a balance between my characters. During my strips about intelligent design I had Penny and Mouse debate the topic. Although I'm firmly against intelligent design in the schools, I still had Mouse present an agrument for it. I've never liked movies, tv shows, books or comics that are preachy and slanted to one political side or the other, and I don't want to do that with my comic.

I have my own opinions, I don't really care.

I guess I lean more towards liberal.

I agree with you.

Here is a chart of my mostly-liberalness:

Hmm.

You know, claiming to be conservative or liberal really means who you prefer imposing on your personal freedoms.

If you're conservative, it means that you'd rather have the government coming in to squash your personal freedoms.

If you're liberal, it means that you'd rather have the guy next door coming in to squash your personal freedoms.

Me, I prefer the government, because at least it's formed from some sort of consensus than the neighbor that believes that hunting on my property is his personal “right”.

..or the college professor who believes that wearing clothes in class infringes on his “academic freedom”.

..or the church group that believes it's there “religious right” to protest the funerals of military servicemen and women.

See, that's the problem with “rights”. They're like opinions…everyone has their own personal flavor. Yes, with a more organized “conservative” system, we discourage some people from expressing their rights, but at least the rest of us can have some peace…

The think I've noticed about younger conservative minded people is how much better than everyone else they seem to feel.

That's possibly one of the most interesting ways I've heard it said.

subcultured
i don't like labeling myself.
it just makes a person act in a certain way because everyone fom that group seems to feel like they have to.

it just limits self growth.

I am neither. Those aren't the only two social parties that exist you know.
Same here. I'm too young for politics right now anyway.

Actually, that's reversed. lol!
But I suppose it's how you look at things.

Aye, more of a personal definition of freedoms really, oddly enough, most conservatives do NOT desire government intervention with personal funds.

Thats closer to socialism dontcha'know, and we here in America ain't social.

Traditionally, conservatives are for less gov. But, the last administration seems to not be traditional conservatives. The rep. party seems to be going through a change… an Orwellian change. ;)

I agree with subcultured on the labeling thing - there's just too many issues that are considered “party specific” that I agree and disagree with. I've taken plenty of those meme tests, and almost every single time it's a different label result based on what they ask, you know?

I believe what I believe as far as my current level of knowledge in various issues allows for. I try not to hoard WMD's for shits and grins.

I also like gummi bears. This is a lynchpin belief. Praise be the gummi, for it is omnipresent.

Here everybody, find out what you REALLY are! Take this quiz, it's easy as pie:

I'm libertarian, by the way.

I ended up as a Centrist according to that quiz… but I was close to Statist and Conservative. So I'm a right leaning centrist, I guess.

According to their little graph, a lot of people are centrist. I probably would have ended up being centrist had I taken the quiz about 15 years ago, but every year of life that I accumulate along with the knowledge and experience that I have sought with it, I've become more and more libertarian.

Neat quiz though, huh?

Dang, that quiz pegged me as a “Centrist”. But I think the quiz is much too short to tell me what I really am.

That's a silly quiz :P
It just reinforces the idea that people can be neatly fitted into categories.

Atom Apple, this is the Debate and Discussion forum, not the Top Drawer, contribution to the discussion involves more than posting pics ;)

On the idea that people fit into nice categories though; it's said that all children start off as conservative, then as they grow into adults they become more idealistic and left leaning- (more community minded), then in old age they become conservative again when they long for simpler values and retreat again from the community.
If you expanded that you could say they go through their “Libertarian” phase in their teens as a transition (more anarchical), and then again as a transition form adulthood into older age. lol!

Yes, it's a simplistic generalisation, but it goes along in the same vein as the quiz and it wasn't my idea- it's an old one that's been bandied about a lot.

Is this discussion about politics or just the way you live?

As for me, I stand in 50-50 liberal and conservative. In my opinion, there are certain limits to liberation and certain limits to conservation. I suppose a bit of conservative is what keeps the beauty of some traditional culture preserved. The world needs a balance of conservative and liberal. If the world is completely liberal, it would be like playing hard rock music on a stage opera and the original opera music will slowly be forgotten as generations pass.

It just about politics really.
I'm very left wing but I love preserving old things, traditions and institutions; they mean a lot to me!
Being on the left doesn't mean you want to discard the old in favour of the new. Not at all. By the same token: right wingers don't always preserve old things, They're quite happy to discard old institutions and practices in favour of new ones. These things don't really follow political lines. ;)

If you're a Conservative, you don't give a rat's ass about the planet.
If you're a liberal, you give so much of a rat's ass about the planet that you're making up problems for it.

The way I see it, if I was a Conservative, I would just make fun of Liberals, and if I was Liberal, I would just make fun or Conservatives. So, naturally, I choose to be neither. That way, I can make fun of both!

Heh, you guys don't really get it when it comes to politics… :)
But that's not surprising, the picture in the US is pretty distorted and polarised. The idea seems to be of a caricature of political positions… Like they were evil cartoon gangs or something that all run around wearing their team shirts and waving their team flags, screaming abuse at one another.

Hmm. Yeah. It's not like that ;)
Most people are a bit of both and more besides, even within the parties that people think of as one or the other.
