Ah, this show is so good. I'm not much into anime and stuff like that, but this show is amazing. I watched the first episode on a YouTube whim, and was sucked into it, like a blackhole sucks in light! So much that I watched all the episodes in two sittings (being grounded helped that) I bought the movie off ebay.

Any thoughts?

It's only a spoiler if you're not caught up with the anime fansubs:)
And it's only a spoiler because there isn't a “whiner” code.

All the characters moving into L's special instantly built magic skyscraper bugged me a lot. To me, the resulting situation has made the last few episodes kinda weak. There are only a few episodes left, so I hope it gets its spark back in time for a big finish.
But it's been a good series so far. Every time it starts to get dull, a new crisis comes up to make me want to tune in again.

I hope you like the movie better than I did.*

*Disclaimer: I am hyper-critical.

why oh why did you put that spoiler box there!? It's so tempting! I haven't read any of the manga (tomorrow hopefully!), but I've seen all the episodes which I hear is incredibly loyal to the manga, but I don't want to ruin any suprises…

I hope I like the movie. I hear it did very well in japan, so I hope it's good.

I've read all 9 volumes of the manga, and they've been really thought-provoking and awesome! Although I haven't seen any of the anime- I can't really watch stuff on YouTube because I only go on the computer at the library…
But I like Deathnote because it reads like a novel, and has one of the strongest, well-thought-out plots I've encountered in a manga. Usually I like to read stuff that's more… I dunno, emotional… than Deathnote, but the crazy mindgames just intrigue me so much!
(and omg L and Kira are sooo in love!!! haha not really… I just feel like I have a ‘yaoi fangirl’ reputation to live up to now.)

Death Note for me is really cool and has a unique story hehehe its even full of twists, I read the manga, many say that the manga is more complete than the show… plus I love the way it was drawn…..

I watched the first few episodes and liked them, but I've already read the manga so it didn't suck me in. I'm not sure I like how the ending of the manga was done. Everything after Volume 7 was somewhat long winded. Everything before that is awesome though.

IMO, both movies rock. The second one was especially good. I hear that the 2nd movie's ending is different from the manga's ending. I'm eagerly awaiting the anime's ending (it should be faithful to the manga) because I can't imagine any ending more fitting than the movie's ending.

Oh, and the ending credits song for DN2 is great. I love it to bits. If only I can figure out the exact lyrics.

The anime's pinnacle, for me, was the episode where the teenage boy and the woman in black walked around for the entire half hour of the show (I'm being vague on purpose to avoid spoilers). That simple, real-time episode had me on the edge of my seat until the last second. Never was the simple act of walking more nerve-wracking and ominous.

The current point of the anime isn't as intense as the earlier episodes, but it's understandable given that the focus has changed to an external antagonist. Now that I've watched the movie, I'm expecting the final episodes to be a blast.

Im watching the series and i go “holy crap this stuff is amazing” most of the time. I never thought id be entertained on a non battle oriented anime before either.

I just downloaded the movie, lets see if its as good as the series.

I just watched the movie…and I can honestly say that I've never been more disappointed and angered in my life. I could have made a better version.

The movie was good, and made some changes which tightened the pace of several sequences found in the anime. The casting of L was good, but Light looks way too much like Frodo to me (which can be good or bad I guess).

that Rem is suddenly just standing there in the “office” and everyone can see her now, yet no one really has a problem with that? There's no scene with “getting to know you” or anything!

If you count the time L has been investigating Kira (long before the police according to him)it took them a year or more before he proposed to move into the hotel, that's enough time to build it, that, if they had people working overtime or the design allowed it or both.

BTW the japanese can't act for shit, but i must admit the i loved the rendering of the shinigami.

Spoiler!!!

Red Slayer, you mean they couldn't act in the movie, right? Because, no, they were all horrible in the movie, but it could just be the horrendious casting job they did. The guy that played L was awful. Light was just ridiculous. The voice acting on the show, on the other hand, is very very good. Even Misa, whose voice makes your ears bleed does a good job with the character.

The voice acting on the show, on the other hand, is very very good.

Light's voice is *perfect* in the anime.. He made me cringe with delight in this past episode after he became Kira again.

And you can never go wrong with Kappei Yamaguchi(L) in any role!
He's by far my favorite seiyuu..
He seems to be most notable now as the voice of Inu Yasha, but he's been around for ages, starting as Ranma. He even does Kyle's voice in the Japanese dub of South Park.

Also, on a random note, the guy who does L in the movie has a cameo in the anime as the voice of Jealous.

And Light's father was played by Takeshi Kaga who is most famous as the ever flamboyant Chairman Kaga, host of Iron Chef. I kept expecting him to take a bite out of a yellow bell pepper.

I foam at the mouth every week waiting for the next episode.

Ooooh, me too..
I get so anxious that I watch it RAW depending only on my 4 years studying Japanese to understand very soon after it airs then catch the sub when it comes out.

Another one that left me on the edge of my seat after every episode was Monster, but it was so frustrating because sometimes it would wait a whole episode or two before it got back to that moment where the most suspenseful parts were. Plus the fansubbers were ultra slow releasing it at the time it was airing, so the wait was painful.

Death Note is definitely one of the best anime series in regards to suspense factor.

So Volume 10 of the manga is pretty good. I encourage you guys to pick it up. Volume 9 trailed a little bit, but the second half of volume 10 gets things interesting again.

2 more volumes to go!

I watched it on youtube too and it took my breath away. The animation is stunning, really amazing stuff. I've always been a fan of the manga and so I'm glad it got translated into anime so well.
