source: TV.com: As you'll remember from September of last year , Viz has licensed the first two live action Death Note movies, retelling the battle between Light and L (with a couple of twists here and there). Well, it's been six months later and we now have some signs that Viz hasn't forgotten about this licensing.

Fangoria.com has posted an exclusive dubbed version of the first live action movie trailer, using the dub voices straight from the anime. However, keep in mind that the site's clearly stated

“while the trailer is dubbed in English, the movie itself will be in its original language and subtitled when Viz releases it Stateside later this spring”

So there you have it. Skimming other forums, people have been talking about the entire movie being dubbed by Viz, which hasn't been confirmed whatsoever. I'm just sayin'. Anyways, expect a DVD release for this movie to come out “later this spring.”

Anime News Network also points out that

“Viz Pictures has been screening this film and its companion piece, Death Note: The Last Name, in festivals and selected theaters since the company announced their licenses in September.”

Who knows? Maybe you'll be one of the lucky few to (legally) see the movie courtesey of a theater near you.

I'm not thrilled about the dubbing, but I'm glad I can finally get an official DVD that's actually Region 1.
Also…WHAT were they thinking when they decided to put a song like Dani California on the trailer?? I mean, I like the song and all, but… Death Note?!

That's if it's going to be English. If I have to read a movie instead of watching, I won't buy it.

It sounds like their using the same voice actors from the anime dub.

…Which makes no sense. The voices don't fit with the live-action actors.

It seems they used the English Voice Actors of the anime for the movie, which is cool BUT it's not something I'm going to die for. And what's with using Dani California? That doesn't fit Death Note at all.

Besides that I've already seen the movie(s) in it's original Japanese form, it was fine the way it was.

Actually, the dub was done only for the American trailer of the film. The actual theatrical release is supposed to be in subtitles.

Oh, that's good then.

Started reading the manga. Can't wait to see this in live action.

After about a year of waiting for it to be not-rented, I checked out a Japanese copy of the movie from my local comic shop of the 1st movie. It's okay, but if you've seen the anime, there isn't much different from it. It's almost like one big cosplay sketch reinacting the whole thing. It's got one plot twist different from the anime involving the FBI's fiance who turns out to be one of L's associates, but other than that its a copy of the first dozen-or-so episodes.

…you can buy them from those “legal” asian action movies in the mall. I saw both of these movies 5 months ago.

I just finished reading the manga last night. I really liked it. However, I don't have a lot of faith in Japanese live-action movies. Jalford's comparison to a cosplay sketch is a pretty good comparison.

Both movies' plot twists were good. IMO, they were better than the corresponding scenes/twists in the manga. Better ‘wow’ factor.

But I still hold the DN anime episode "Light Takes A Walk With the FBI Woman" in a special place in my heart. That was simply the best episode of the entire anime series.

Very few Japanese live-action movies based on anime or manga are very good. The original Lupin The 3rd: Strage Psychokinetic Energy is pretty good, considering it came out a few years before the anime. Chromartie High School is like a cosplayer sketch too, but actually done RIGHT! The Cutie Honey movie is okay too, but kinda limps during the second act.
