Dunno why this was locked. “Death Race” is an actual movie.

Yeah….

Wasn't this called “The Running Man” about 20 years ago?

I feel dumber just having the trailer in my head.

Actually, no, it was called Death Race 2000 a little over 30 years ago. It featured such great actors as David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone and it had an even dumber premise back then, too. It's one of those movies that has entertainment value because it is so hokey and bad.

Ah. I guess they remade it with the whole “convicts competing for their life” premise, ala “Running Man”. Yeah, as bad as that old film looks, this one looks even worse, if that's possible.

The original movie was great schlock. It was great to see Kung-Fu punch out Rocky!

The original Corman Death Race is a classic B-movie and inspired the notorious video games series Carmageddon. I must admit I am excited for this remake. It sounds campy, cheesy, and filled with crazy action scenes. Plus, unlike 80% of the current crop of summer action flicks, this one is at least rated R.

It's already earned a place in my DVD collection, right next to both copies of Rollerball, the Running Man, and the original Death Race. :)

I don't know about this remake. The original was a parody and never seemed to try to be anything more than a B-movie. That worked incredibly well in it's favor since it was campy and over-the-top and never took itself too seriously. While I see comic moments in the trailers, this movie doesn't really look like it's trying for the same feel as the original. Everything is so gritty and they seem to be trying for some more serious plot elements. Honestly, they seem to be trying to elevate the movie above its B-movie roots and I think that will ruin a lot of what made the original so fun.

Really? I found the trailer to be a little cheesy and over-the-top. I don't think I could really take it seriously, even if they try for a gritty plotline.

But then, I loved the Rollerball remake, so eh, I'll wait and see. The uncut Rollerball remake that is, not the toned down version.

This movie looks terrible and wonderful at the same time. Like half of Jason Stathams other movies.

It looks stupid… But whatchable. o_O
What's Ian McShane doing in that crap? I miss Lovejoy… :(
At least he' lost the horrible tan.

Why are meat-head muscle-apes in these movies always expert fighters? I've yet to see one that could walk properly let alone fight like some sort of karate master.
Prison fights should be short, nasty, ugly, uncinematic and end with someone stabbed in the guts. As a mater of principal. :)

Women prisoners look like that? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Only in lesbian prison rape exploitation films…

Still, for some strange reason it doesn't repel me. I could actually watch it.

Probably

Well, you know, sometimes things are more than they seem.

And I guess this movie can't be worse than “Speed Racer”.

Just got back from seeing it. It was an alright film. It's one of those movies you go to cause you don't have anything better to do. I give it a B-. Jason Statham only has one emotion thru the ENTIRE film. But eh… It was see this or The Longbacks or whatever the movie with Ice Cube was in. I think I made a wise decision. A decent end of summer film. Lots of action.

i saw it opening day.

i'd say it's a great action movie.
as wills said, it's one of those movies you go to, and it is the end of the summer, and most of your friends have already headed off to college, and you're the only one left waiting to move back. (run-on sentence)

what I don't get why people go watch action movie expecting it to have a plotline.

do you watch porn for it's “plotline”?

ummm, sorry?
I'm not sure I get you…
You're saying, that like porn, you only watch a so called “action film” for whatever action sequences that happen to be in it?

Unless you're just being flippant (:)), then you'd be better off not going to films at all and instead just watching sport or compilations of action sequences in film previews or trailers lol!

sort of, but not really.
I mean, when I went it watch this movie, I didn't expect the plot/premise to be that great. Like I knew what was going to happen from start to finish. The characters were one sided, but I wasn't expecting them to be anymore than that.

It's entertainment, what more do you want from it?

I guess my standard is lower than most people, so I tend to enjoy movies more.

I came up with the porn reasoning when Doom came out. Obviously the premise was bad, but I wanted to see how they brought the monsters into the movie and the first person cam. In Doom for windows 95, you only read a short summary of what happens in the manual.

That's fine then. I feel the same.
Polts though… I think action films should usually have strong plots, so it keeps you interested enough to want to see the next stunt etc.
What they lack most will be the character development and all the themes and symbolism, or even historical accuracy or whatever that you'll see in other sorts of film.

Your idea to have the right sort of expectations for certain sorts of movie is perfectly sound :)
ie. kids movies like “Inspector Gadget” are meant for kids, “Rambo 3” was meant to be watched with the brain in sleep mode, and “Eat for this is my body” is only meant to be seen by film students and the arty farty set. lol!

If you don't score double points for running down women and people aren't throwing themselves into traffic to get on TV, it's not Death Race in my book. It wasn't stunt work and CG that made the first movie fun, so it sounds like they completely missed the point of the original with the remake. As I suspected from the trailers, they're shooting for a completely different feel and audience with the movie. I'll pass.

Having seen the old one some time ago, I went to check it out. Not surprisingly for an opening night, the theaters were less than packed.

Eh, it's okay. It has really nothing to do with the old campy one. Lots of good action scenes and violence, but utterly nothing else to it. Very video game-like as well.

I enjoyed how (Not really a spoiler) they did the opening to the tracks like you were watching it over the internet or somethin'.
“For the LOWLOW price of 99 dollars, you can watch… DEATH RACE!!! Or pay 259 dollars to see ALL THREE TRACKS OF… DEATH RACE! Pay NOW!…. DEATH RACE!”
I especially liked the opening, where they say the country is in an economic depression. So why exactly are people spending all that money if it's hard to get money?

This movie definitely was like a video game. You had to run over a sword or shield to get weapons and stuff. Yeah.

What was the name of that big truck thing they had in the middle of the second race? That was awesome. Best scene in the movie.

I like these types of afternoon escape movies.
Not alot of thought put into them, just fun nonsense, with lots of Big Budget explosions and a Hot Chick in the passenger seat!
All that being said, in all honesty, it looks like a rental.
That guy,Jason Statham is a great actor, he was in Crank and Snatch, two other high adrenalin movies.

The Movie he would be Perfect for is Judge Dredd.

Love the Stalone connection there, very fitting :)

You're right though, He'd be perfect. It'd be good to see a Dredd film that was closer to the comic. (unless you mean the character from the famous Ska song that predates the comic by quite a lot… lol!)

ha, when I saw that part, i was thinking, this is like mario kart. except you die!

and the big rig was named juggernaut. I didn't really expect them to take the the rig down like in the movie.

Yeah, he played as Frankenstein in the original Death Race 2000. (Thanks, Wikipedia!)

I saw the trailer for this when I saw hellboy 2, and it looks like a dumb movie. I'd watch it whilst drinking, coz if there's anything that high concept films do well it's gratuitous and aesthetically pleasing action sequences, I'd watch it.
