DIVORCE!

I'm about to have my first one (That sounds ominous doesn't it) and was curious about others experiences of Dissolution in here.

While mine thankfully isn't going to be one of those drawn out, expensive battles… just a case of paying and admin fee and getting rubber stamped by a judge I'm still curious to know of others experiences in regard to this.

I have to admit I never thought I'd be getting divorced at the age of 29… I always figured I'd wait until my mid fourties, have a midlife crisis and a sordid affair with some barely out of her teens bimbo, and have my marriage end THAT way.

Best laid plans and all the rest.

But hey, I still get to spend lots of time with my wee girl and now I have more time for comics!

You don't sound that upset about the divorce. May I be bold and ask what caused you two to break up?

Feel free to ignore that question if you don't want to answer it.
Those were my two cents.

Well we split up 2 years ago… in this country you can't get divorced until you've been apart for at least 2 years so I guess time has eased everything. At this point I just want to get on with living.

There really wasn't a single reason for our break up… our relationship was knackered before we even got married but for the sake of children and family we did what we thought was the right thing. How wrong were we.

Woah, where do you live? I've never heard of laws like that… that's pretty interesting, and probably a good idea.

I live in New Zealand… The hard case thing is we were only married for 5 months before we seperated and yet we still have to wait 2 years. Not that I'm complaining mind you… It allows a decent sort of a cooling off period I suppose.

It's been almost 2 years ago now since I got divorced. My ex left me for this other dood that was a mutual friend of ours. It was gay and I totally lost all faith in other people. Futhermore I lost the equity I had gained on my house because I had to refinance and had to rent it out and move into my parents basement so I could keep it. I'm finally going to get to go home at the end of this month and lately my life hasn't been as lonely and miserable.

I guess since this is the “open up” topic, I might as well admit that me and my wife are separated. There's a law where I live where you have to wait a whole year to get a divorce. That year is almost up.
Those were my two cents.

me and my wife nearly got divorced. with my job having me gone so often, she couldnt take being on her own. she moved back to indiana, where she had to live for 6 months before she could use their laws to get a divorce…we were seperated for 8 months…and then some things happened, and we're back together….definatly needed that time apart tho. i think it helped us both.

Well I guess it's better than staying together with someone who you absolutely don't get along with. I see so many couples around that seem like they haven't loved each other for about 20 years and are totally cheating on eat other (and probably fight a lot too) but still stay together. I can't imagine living in a situation like that (especially because my parents divorced when I was pretty young).

Expect to have child protective services called on you. If not by your ex, then someone. For single parents it's almost an inevitability (here anyways).

My sister found a way around the child services thing when she had my nephew. She called them herself and talked to them. They did a couple visits just to see how she was doing and nobody has heard from them since.

I don't know much about divorces, but I did have my ex-fiancee break it off after a month of being engaged when she decided to reveal she was cheating. It's probably not the same, but at the time it felt like it. Now, I'm actually kind of thankful to her for doing it because I'd hate myself if I'd married her and gotten halfway through life before finding out.

Wait? So you're telling me that it's almost an eventuality that child services will be on your case just because you're a single parent?

I'm a great dad, you couldn't accuse me of any type of neglect.

For the record it's my Girls 4th birthday today and I've just got home from spending the day with her and taking her for pony rides. God she's beautiful!

Sorry but thats the truth. Those child “protective” services are full of pedophiles.

Yes there are good people in it. Who are in it for the right reasons. But that doesn't change my opinion of CPS. I do not trust the CPS. Sorry.

And I highly encourage everyone I know to NOT TRUST the CPS.

I don't say random things without the proof to back it up. I know its hard to believe but its about time you open your eyes and see the real world. Sorry if this post may sound rude and offensive, but it really disgusts me how people would rob a child of his/her innocence.

If you can torture children, you literally are a demon from the lowest circle of hell.

Oh kyu… Peds find ways to get into any positions of authority and control.
It's their modus operandi man, it's what they do.

It always annoys me when people say stupid things like “all those Catholic priests are paedophiles” or “all those child protection workers are paedos” or all scout masters are peds".

The real fact of the matter is that ALL institutions where an adult has responsibility and power over children attract that sort of people. The cases prove it time and again. Most people in those industries are NORMAL, you just find a higher concentration of paedophiles because it's a fruitful hunting ground for them.

Some professions:-
Teachers, police, child minders, scoutmasters, priests (all kinds; evangelicals, cultists, rabbis, Muslims, Catholics Protestants, Buddhists etc.), celebrities (film, TV, musicians, sports stars), judges, doctors, psychologists and so on.

The list is infinite. Blame the perpetrators not their professions you silly fellow!

kyupol, please don't take some high-profile news articles as ‘proof’ that blanket statements are correct. :] Oz pretty much said all that needed to be mentioned though.

You also have quite a bad habit of derailing topics because you post things like this.

I don't know about CPS, but at my school there was MANDATORY counseling (with a psychiatrist) for all children of divorced parents, which was REALLY expensive.

My parents had to hide the fact that I was divorced for 5 years from my school because of that… I thought the mandatory part was a little extreme…

Seriously though, Jonko, I can't believe that! Not only that they would FORCE you into counseling, but that they would make you pay for it? I don't even know where to start with that. That is WAY over the line.

Woah, where do you live? I've never heard of laws like that… that's pretty interesting, and probably a good idea.

They do that where I live, too (East Coast U.S.). People who want to get a divorce have to give it a one-year waiting period. After that year, if they still want a divorce, then they can proceed.

I have never been through a divorce, nor do I plan to. I think if you get married, then it's for life. Divorce is just an “easy way out” to me; if one is thinking about divorce, then why get married in the first place? I believe in the whole “mend it, don't end it” theory: if you have a problem in a marriage, talk it over; don't run away.

A family member of mine is going through a divorce now because he and his wife never communicated. I feel especially bad for his kids; they are very young and will grow up thinking divorce is OK. On another note, my husband was once divorced at a young age (I think he was 25 at the time), because his then-wife decided she wanted to be a lesbian. huh!?

Not that I've been through it, but I think divorce is necessary in some cases. Like the lesbian thing you mentioned, abusive couples, or people who just got married too soon before getting to know each other well enough. If someone is making you totally miserable, I don't think you should stay with them. Seeing one's parents constantly fighting isn't good for kids, either.

How a pedophile slipped through the cracks

It's shameful really, and I'll I'll grant you those five, but you'll have just as much luck convincing me not to keep a German Shepherd for a pet because someone somewhere got mauled by one. With hundreds of thousands of CPS workers in the civilized world, five, ten or twenty is hardly “full of.” However, Ozone said everything else I might say in response, so I'll leave it at that.

But honestly, here in the south especially near the military installations where divorces are rampant; we literally have some people who believe that if they call CPS on their ex enough times we'll remove the children and place with them. It's so annoying to show up to a house where they say “My ex-wife is an unfit mother and she's beating the kids black and blue and starving them and she's whoring herself out to pay rent” only to show up and find the kids are fat, happy, and the mother makes more than I do and only works half the hours.

It's compounded by the fact that every faculty member of the school is a mandated reporter, so if any of your kids show up with anything that MIGHT resemble abuse, they're required by law to report, punishable by up to six months of jail time. Long story short, 70% of all cases we get are total crap, and half of those involve divorces. But if you two had a clean break so to speak, then you ought to have nothing to worry about.
