i think, with the exeption of final fantasy 7 advent children, street fighter2 the animated movie and the legend of zelda minish cap manga, movies/animes of videogames are mostly cheesy and untrue to the original game. anyone else agree?

Yeah, pretty much. The old Sonic the Hedgehog and mario cartoons were cool though.

I thought Advent Children was pretty stupid. But I do agree, Street Fighter the Animated Movie is one of the few that was actually good. There were a lot of other excellent Zelda mangas in addition to the Minish Cap one.

We need to just face it, movies based on games will almost always be awful. Why? Here's a list of reasons.

- Many games actually have ridiculous plots and characters.
- You're taking the “game” part away, so people aren't playing it. This means the movie is relying on the game's plot and characters, however good or weak they may be. And it will almost certainly be less fun than playing the game.
- Hollywood producers don't invest much money in game-based movies. They see them as a quick cash-in. This means smaller budgets and worse directors and actors.
- Videogame nerds are notoriously hard to please.
- Uwe Boll is trying to ruin all our favorite games.
- Games are still a small enough niche that it's hard to intersect them with the more profitable general public. People want their movies to make money.

But maybe that's unfair?

I agree… Blegh.

But I'm a dreamer… I hope the Metal Gear Solid movie will revolutionize the way we look at videogame flicks.

But since the movie producers already decided they want nothing to do with David Hayter, I doubt it.

Wing Commander the Movie… yech. Even the guy playing the part of Christopher Blair in that movie thought so. I mean… the Kilrathi are the MAIN enemy of the game, but they only got 9 seconds of screen time. Now I'm wondering what Mark Hamill must've thought (he played the part of Christopher Blair in the games Wing Commander III and IV)…

No, no I don't. 'Cause I have loved the Resident Evil movies. I also give a lot of leadway for “entertainment” value…I know goin' in—-these movies aren't going to change my life or make me a better person, in any way. The most I hope for is that the actors get all their lines right and I get some explosions. Mortal Kombat, yeah…I know it wasn't Empire of the Sun or anything, but Veronica Vaughn kicked booty in it and I am all about the “Action Chick.” Dungeons & Dragons with new Jimmy, was just what I thought it would be; as was Tomb Raider and how can you not like Van Damme (Street Fighter,) he's B-Movie Gold.

The Wing Commander animated series sucked hard too. As did both Mortal Kombat TV series, the animated one and the live-action one.

There's been 4 Sonic animates series: 2 just titled “Sonic The Hedgehog”(one comedy/one action), Sonic Underground, and Sonic X. There's also the Sonic anime movie which is mainly for kids.

I liked the first Tomb Raider movie. The second was, eh. Then again a lot of sequels end up being ‘eh’.

As far as Hollywood goes, I'd agree with you. Studios are too disconnected with the source material to really make good on it. Concerning anime, though, I woudl have to say that there are actually quite a few anime series and OAVs which do a fairly good job of adapting games. Of course, it helps that many Japanese games are shooting to appeal to the same audiences that watch anime, so the storylines and characters won't be that different between the two formats.

Resident Evil 2 surprised me, I actually liked it!

FF7 Advent Children didn't entirely make sense (probably because I don't play the game), the story was decent, dialogue was stiff at times but the CGI was breathtaking. My wife and I overall liked it.

Those are rare exceptions, though – most of the time, movies/shows based on games/products reek.

I've played that game more times than I can count, and it still didn't make too much sense.

Yes, yes they do. They best they've ever reached is “mediocre”

Sonic the hedgehog was awful, just awful. You like it because it has that nostalgia to it for you, but in reality it was a horrible horrible show. You know what show I love? Is Captain N: The Game Master. I absolutely love it. But I recognize that my love for it is based TOTALLY on the nostalgia and not in any inherent quality of the show. That show is equally awful.

I still rank Mortal Kombat (as awful as it was) as the best videogame/film adaptation. I'm not saying Mortal Kombat was really any good. I'm saying thats how bad videogame movies have been.

I too have high hopes for the Metal Gear Solid movie, but thats mostly because the games are so damn cinimatic. They are so dependant moving storyline that it makes or breaks the game. I mean who looks back on MGS2 with fondness. I look back on that game with “What do you mean I can't play as Snake” and following that up with “I'm on my third time through and this still doesn't make any goddamn sense.”

Well, I've seen both Tomb Raider movies, and both Mortal Kombat movies. For Tomb Raider, all I can say is that if it weren't for Angelina Jolie…..and as for Mortal Kombat, first one was ehhh, and the second one was crapola.

I'm hoping they don't screw up the Soul Calibur movie, and I really hope that if they make a Kingdom Hearts movie, that they don't screw that up either.

MGS movie *may* turn out well, but Soul Calibur movie? That one would definitely suck.

Hollywood is too disconnected with videogames to make any good movies of them. They're just starting to “get it” with comic books, and video games is even more “underground” and “new” compared to comics. Seriously, ppl in Hollywood are not us. They live on another planet.

Anime and Jpnese movies, however, do seem to get it when it comes to video game adaptations.

It helps that a lot of the same people work on both. More often than not, the Japanese employ manga and anime regulars to work on character and environment designs as well as scenarios in video games, plus you often have writers and designers from the major video game development teams helping out in anime adaptations of their work. Both industries kind of go hand in hand in Japan, so it isn't much of a surprise that the Japanese tend to “get it” more often than Hollywood. Also, it's become a fairly regular occurance these days that popular video games get accompanying manga and anime releases.

I can't believe David Hayter won't have anything to do with it. I know he just did voice work for snake in the games but… Damn. I've still got a lot of hopes for that though. I mean the video game it self had a lot of thought put into the story to begin with. So… Here's hoping.

Videogame movies are so up and down for me.
I liked the first Mortal Kombat,
Hated all the resident Evils,
Doom was eh,
The first Tomb Raider was alright, but I never bothered to see the second,
Advent Children was really cool as far as action goes, but the plot was difficult to follow.
I REALLY liked Street fighter Alpha the movie.
But street Fighters the animated series in japan was so god awful, I couldn't get through the first two episodes.

i would have to say, for a movie based upon a video game, they should stick to the plot of the game.

i never saw tomb raider, resi evil or doom.

i heard there is a metroid prime movie coming out. what do you think this will end up like? i think it will end up being really bad. especially dialogue. samus never talks in any of the games, and there is no'one to talk TO in the first place. i would like to see how (if) hollywood gets round this barrier and if the movie even makes it out of the production office.

the live action street fighter sucked ass.

One movie studio bought the rights to Metroid for a movie, but it was more of a rights-holding strategy than something they wanted to make a movie out of. They just wanted to be sure that no other studio made a Metroid movie, and meanwhile they'd think about it. They got the rights to Metroid years ago.

Stay tuned for another Street Fighter live action movie. It's not going to be sequel to the awful first one, but sort of a “redo”. This one will focus on Chun Li. I suspect it will only be marginally better than the first one.

heh, that reminds me of those videos you see on the net that focus on Chunli… ewwww…

A Metroid movie would be worse than a live action Sonic movie!

Personally, I think they should make a movie out of the original Devil May Cry. If they just cut out all those puzzles, that thing with the ghost ship, and kept it inside the castle, then it would probably be a fairly decent action film. Not a masterpeice, but at least enjoyable.

Of course, I enjoyed Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, FF: TSW, and both RE's, so maybe I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.

It's kind of funny because these days more people probably play video games than read comics.

Yeah but the most played games are stuff like Big Game Hunter, Sims, Myst, and World of Warcraft.

I wouldn't mind if they made a WoW movie. Should be just about as “good” as Dungeons & Dragons, lol.

Street Fighter V (the TV anime) was good for the 1st half of the series. Very very good. If you didn't like after the 1st 2 episodes, you just have heavily preconceived bias. The 1st 2-3 episodes of SFV inspired me like few anime do.
