Emperor Nick (who we haven't seen in quite a while) at one time did these. I think making the Drunk Duck awards is a good idea. It can strengthen the sense of community we have here, which is one of the best things about Drunk Duck.

My advice as you do this is to work closely with DD Admins to make this thing high-quality, fair, and official. And come up with some great categories as well.

My problem with any kind of award thingy is that it always ends up being a popularity contest; particularly in ones where voting is open to the public.

I'm also doing that other comic "Space Waffles".
We now have a podcast called The Random Pirate Comics Show!

then why not limit the voting to Mods and admins?

Find 14 people willing to read every comic on Drunk Duck and I say it's a go!

I think we'd need to have a system where DD artists would apply to be considered in the category of their choice…and then either you could have a bunch of panel judges or a popularity voting system.

Either way, you need a pretty strong coder to do all of this.

Yeah. That could work. They're all responsible, intelligent people, all fairly accountable, they're a wide age range, and they have quite varied tastes.

I don't trust that Ozone guy though, he's a bit of an arsehole…

You're the only one

____________

Who needs a coder? Just set it up in the forum and advertise it on the main page. Self nominations in various categories first up. Maybe we could thin those down to 5 in each category with an initial voting round among the nominees for their own category, and then admins and mods can judge from there.

Easy.
isn't it?

We should get some less conventional catagories my personal suggestions: best use of cut and paste characters, Best use of MSpaint, most insane robot character.
Of course you will. All intelligent beings dream. Nobody knows why.

Also, tell random people they are awsome! it helps!

There should be different awards for each kind of category. Like Sprite, Manga, Humor, Fantasy, and Abstract. All of the awards in each category all correspond to the category (ex: Sprite would be Best Use of Sprites)

Well, duh.

I really can't see how an award could be divided from that.

Even categories like best art or best writing, the winner will be the one that is LIKED THE BEST by the majority of voters.

Of course awards are popularity contests, that's why people like getting them.
The KAMics - my cartoons
KAM's Fanart - fanart
KAMics Kast - cast pages

I think the best way to do this (because of the huge amount of comics on DD) would be just to keep limited to the forums. Besides, a lot of people on DrunkDuck don't even touch the forums so they wouldn't know they'd won something unless we put it in a bulletin or something. As far as categories just go with something common and unoriginal.

Best Sprite
Best Manga
Best Strip
Best Story
Most Original
Most Humorous
Best Fantasy
Best Action
Best Abstract
blah, blah, this is a job for admin (if i had my way i'd have worst comic on the list)
and ofcourse the DrunkDuck whammy award (or something highly prestigious)

also have like a photoshop trophy or something for people to put in their signatures

Wow, that's a lot of talking…

My problem with any kind of award thingy is that it always ends up being a popularity contest

Yes, well, is that really a bad thing? If a comic is popular, it's popular because it's good.

My advice as you do this is to work closely with DD Admins to make this thing high-quality, fair, and official. And come up with some great categories as well.

I will, who wins will be determined by admins and moi, along with a influence of regular comic makers via a series of polls. Hell yes, we'll have great categorys! this is only the beginning!

Find 14 people willing to read every comic on Drunk Duck and I say it's a go!

This will work via nomination, not reading EVERY COMIC. That's virtually impossible.

I don't trust that Ozone guy though, he's a bit of an arsehole…

I don't know who he is and it don't matter. Everyones opinion still counts, and a couple of assholes balance out the people who fail to understand that the rating system goes lower than five.

Er, so like the Top Drawer Idol thing, only more structured and less funny?

I wanted structured and funny. As i'm making the award cerimony comic, it shall be funny, I promise you that.

We should get some less conventional catagories my personal suggestions: best use of cut and paste characters, Best use of MSpaint, most insane robot character.

Oh yea, they'll be some funny ones. Like “Most Insecure Comic Author”.

I could create a voting system on a Drunk Duck page. Just email me about it or something.

Great! You'll hear from me soon.

also have like a photoshop trophy or something for people to put in their signatures

Already thought of that, a different award for every category.

I don't know if it'd be very accurate to call it a “Drunk Duck Award” if it was only for people on the message board.

What? No, this is for everybody. I just put this here to ask if anyone else thought of it before me.

I'm too lazy to type an answer.

Can I ask you to put something about this in the news so everyone can find out about it?

The FORUMS man! :-D

But what else would qualify it?
I still like my idea better… It minimises the popularity contest aspect quite a bit and allows for some good, honest, old-fashioned, straight out evaluation.

I didn't volunteer for that. :) It sounds like you already know how you want this thing to be run.

I think categories like theat one will only work if you do self-nominations, otherwise people may get offended or feel they're being ridiculed.

And then the problem with self-nomination is that for every category, there's 200 comics with one nomination each. Who would narrow that down? Not me, I don't have that much time. :)

Yup, of course. I'll even make you a temporary forum to put things if you want.

It sounds like some deciding needs to happen as far as how the Awards would be done, though… it seems like you have one plan and other people have other ideas. If this is a community comics site, shouldn't the community decide how they want their awards done? Perhaps your first announcement should be that there is a desire for some DD Awards but input is needed as far as categories, nominations, etc.

Personally I think self nomination is a good idea, at least for the kind of category you mentioned.
And my suggestion for narrowing the field is for the nominees to vote amongst themselves until the field winnows down to 5 or so.

That's a good suggestion, mainly because I managed to include the word “winnow”.

I don't mind self-nomination as long as we authors can have the sensibility to nominate other quality comics besides ours for awards we think they qualify for.

Can I suggest some character-based awards, too?

Best Male Character
Best Female Character
Best Villain

I'm sure there could be other character-based awards as well. These are top-of-the-head ideas.

I'd only like a “Best WTF” category if the nominees used the tool properly. There are too many comics that use randomness as a crutch because they can't think of actual funny things. It's like that one time when Tim Burton couldn't come up with a good ending to Planet of the Apes, so he just created a random meaningless ending that didn't make sense. “Random” is funniest when the rest of the comic makes sense.

How many DD comics have “Random” in their title these days?

That, and I can guarentee you that lots of people would start making them just for this reason.

Also, If we would go ahead with this, review rules should apply. No less than 20 pages.
