I'll forward Niccea's virus threat thing to Wowio.
Well done Niccea.

Norton is actually rated pretty highly from what I've seen.

———–
That wrong comics thing is an old, old old bug from the beginning of the 2006 reboot. It does nothing, just displays those comics when you're logged out but still think you're logged in because your avatar is showing. It's stupid and annoying but apparently too harmless and trivial for any of our programmers to ever fix- you can't edit those comics because you're not actually logged in at the time.

Thank you for reporting it . That screenshot could come iin useful to explain the problem to people experiencing it. Hopefully when the next redesign happens we'll finally say good bye to that damn thing. :(

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but the search function doesn't work.

The site has been logging me off after “turning a page” while I am reading a comic

I mentioned the Norton thing because it has never called DD threat until the move.

I think we need the old server back…

I mean I haven't got anything like other people other than the logging out thing and the slowness.

I'm going to say my peace once. The following things will literally kill Drunkduck. I'm just being realistic here.

1. The constant service interruptions due to the server move. It's obviously not a one-time hassle or a short-term one. It will continue to piss off and drive away the remaining reader base, bit by bit. The only realistic option is to scrap Volte's DD, and set up a new DD with professional net code. Ofc no one will do that.

2. The ads on the front page cross the line. There are ads, then there are ads. Look at the front page and tell me those ads aren't hurting DD. As a realist, I actually support site ads, but the current front page is BAD.

I'm currently unable to upload new comics, I just end up with a broken image on my homepage. The Author's comments seem to work just fine though. If I right-click on the broken image icon, and choose to ‘View Image’ I get this:

They can't. Those were actually platinum's servers. They've been trying to move off for a while now and always had problems, but now is pretty much the “have to move” time. This move is going better than previous attempts though, and it sounds like they are figuring out most of the problems.

1. That is actually the plan and has been mentioned a few times in newsposts and in the forums. It is why the previous beta version failed, because Volte's code was too hard to work with. Part of getting DD onto new servers is so the coders can start working on a new codebase and integrate the existing databases (so both versions can run concurrently).

2. My assumption would be that no one is happy about the ads, except perhaps the people who keep approving them or whatever. My guess is that in order to get those to go away there will have to be some evidence that the ads decrease mainpage hits or lose Wowio money somehow. Considering the size and duration of the ad I'm guessing the advertiser paid a lot of money. I'm not sure how to combat that.

With all the upload probelms the ads for me seemed to have vanished. The last one I got was Careerfinder. Either that or they can't sell the 0302 EST slot.

To me, at first (and 2nd) glimpse the front page looks like a "Scout Camp - Badge To The Bone“ site rather than a ”Drunkduck" site. Honestly, the multiple ads on the same subject ends up being more prominent than the DD content.

I'm not blaming this on the Admins or something; it's not their job description or within their power to do anything that WOWIO decides. I'm just pointing it out. Take a look at other comics hosting sites. No sane 1st-time visiter would choose to read or use DD over other sites.

The big ad is hardly a big issue but it does drown out the drunk duck banner/logo. Someone should make sure you can tell what site is actually is.

These guys often have dig ds but you can always tell what site you are on.

I mentioned the Norton thing because it has never called DD threat until the move.

I use Norton as well, and noticed this too. I second Niccea in that it never called the site a threat before the move. Everything seems to work fine now except for those comic thumbnails all being gone.

I can't update a comic. After I fill everything and “upload”, it brings me back to the “comic pages” section on my account, but there is no new pages.

I've just done several tests and it worked fine, but slowly.

I was able to upload new pages, edit them and delete them.

Perhaps it was due to the form timing out before it could finish processing? The site is going through periods of superslowness and timeouts still on occasion. Maybe try again?

I'm unable to view any of the comics I've updated since the issues arrived. I can upload it, but I can't see it.

The site is so slow it takes forever for a comment to post or a page to change forward or backward. Took about 2 minutes for this Reply panel to come up.

The site should be running a bit faster now, in particular the comic pages. We've maxed out the number of allowed simultaneous connections, which normally would affect the server's memory, but it doesn't seem to be using much at the moment, so it should be okay.

DD :

The site is still way, way, way too slow. I have a very high speed internet connection for trading stocks so my connection is not the issue. I also use Firefox to connect. But it is still much too slow. I expected an order of magnitude increase in surfing speed around the site. It was much better before this server move. Speed has gotten much worse.

I know the Wowio boys are working on this. The problem is everybody is used to surfing speeds on Amazon and Ebay. I'm hoping we can get to that.

Okay, things seem to mostly be back to normal. Still a bit lacking in the speed department, but acceptable for now. There's also the odd logging out problem, always picking the worst possible time to do so (like right as I hit the reply button for instance :P). I just noticed, though, that I cannot re-upload comics, say if I'm correcting a mistake made in a comic I have already posted. It just keeps displaying the old version of said comic.

Other than the above issues, things seem to be more or less back in order as far as I can see, though. :)

Drunkduck looks like a DVD shop with that there ad.

I wanted to open up Internet Explorer and get a look at the site without adblock to see what people were talking about, but no images will load. All I see is one 160x160 flash ad with localized cable tv and bank adverts.

That would depend on you definition of OK, it is still running slower that Windows 3.11 booted. I understand maxing a server memory slowing down response time however if the site isn't optimized it will be slow with or without a server load. How much bandwidth does it take for all these ads? I might be willing to pay a small monthly fee to see the site ad free and running faster.

Just thought it would be worth mentioning - I was able to upload an update for my comic just fine. No interruptions, and the image showed up.

One thing that I've noticed is that during what I assume to be peak times (around 1pm PST for me) pretty much everything takes a while to load. I mean everything from general page loads to the images on the site. And then during the evening hours, it's the fastest I've ever seen it. It's been consistently like this for me for the past three or four days.

Before the move I never experienced such a shift in load times. I'm not very knowledgeable on this stuff, but is this because the server is taking on not only high traffic but changes to it as well? Otherwise, this might be something worth looking into.

Not sure if this particular error has been reported, but it seems there are still some problems with A-D comics.

Archive pages for A-D comics can't be changed with a new page, it still loads the same old one. Adding a NEW page and changing that works but not any pages added before the server move.
