I'm kind new to this flash animation stuff but I'd like to get a little better at it. I know it doesn't entirely relate to comics, but any tips, pointers of bits of advice would be very helpful as I need to make one for my VA class.

I'm still new to Flash myself, but I've managed to put a few things together for my site. Build up a tutorial database so that you have references. You'll never do anything exactly like the tutorials but if you have a programmer's mindset you can adapt it to your needs.
That's “Dr. BlkKnight” to all of you.

A bit of both actually.
