Well alot of music today has quite a bit of profanity in it.
I was listening to a song today and I counted 178 profane words in roughly 4 minutes and 45 seconds, which is pretty crazy imo. Do you know any songs that beat that? I looked online for a list but I couldn't find anything.

they are mostly coming from rap songs…rap used to be good.
i can only listen to a few rappers (i.e. NAS). most of them are just posers looking to get money and sex.

it's not really about poetry or being a wordsmith anymore.

I agree :s That's a sad shame. Music these days is getting way too out of hand >< Rap in particular. Rap was so much better a long time ago ._.

All music has declined in quality.
You notice rap more because it's more commercialized and it's mainstream.

“Profane” words are only things to do with religion ok. ;)
You're just talking about swearing.

I don't see what's wrong with it, swearing has been a part of music from the beginning; thousands of years ago. It was just pop music in the 30's, 40's and 50's (mainly the US) that really started this artificially nicey, nicey clean crap without “nasty words”. Jeebus, we don't even have “naughty” words in the dictionaries that come with word processing programs these days. It's horrific! I think that is criminal. These are valid parts of the English language, and they're quite often older and more venerable than a lot of other words we use these days: like BOUNCEBACKABILLITY! That's in a real dictionary now… :(
Some fucking imbecile didn't know the meaning of “resilient”.

So, in short: swearing is A-OK :) But the beeping out and silencing of swearing is treating you and I like morons.

Somewhat unrelated, but I was watching Seinfeld last night and they didn't bleep out the word “fuck”. I thought that was still a no-no on American TV. :?

when it comes down to it, anythings including swearings fine when it can add to the song, the thing is that too many songs just use swearing for the sake of it or rely on it which doesn't really add to the song, it takes away.

Besides you don't need to swear to be naughty. Look at AC/DC

i don't mind a little swearing, but if the song sounds like an extreme case of tourette, it leads me to believe the singer/rapper doesn't know what he's talking about.

With so much explicitness, its much easier for people like me… who are total newbs in music to compose their own songs. I'd give it a shot:

Fuck the world! Yeah!
Fuck everyone of you! Fuck all mothafuckas!
Yeah!!!
Dont mess with me cuz AMA gengsta! I got gengstashit and smack all the hoes and bitches! I'ma husla mothafucka!
Me gonna shoot yo ass punch yo face!
I'ma give you left right left right one two knock you out bitch!
YEAH!!! Fuck dis shit mothafuckas!!!

BWWWWAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!

You see. There. 3 minutes to compose a song. :)

Lemme try another one:

WAAAAH!!! I hate this life!
Nobody understands me…
My girlfriend broke up with me!!!
And I'm so broken… soooo broken… so allonnne…
No girl likes me. yeah yeah. I'm a loser… uhuhuh…

Life is soooo bad…
I'm gonna cut my wrists… until my hands fall off…
waaah!!! fuck! I'm so miserable… sooo miserable…
I'm just a teenager. Nobody cares. Nobody loves me.
Nobody understaaaannndddssss!!!

See how easy it is?

Something to do with uneducated people trying to express their rage through a medium that they're familiar with?

Depends on many factors. Mostly time of day and usage.
