The only real advice for you is to practise. You could look on the internet for a guide.

I'm having the same trouble using GIMP, so I am just uploading all my hand drawings now instead of trying to edit them on GIMP. Perhaps if I practiced a lot more than my comics would look a lot better but I am also a full time student with a full time job so any tips and tricks at all would help a lot.

Guides are essential for software like this, go to deviantart.com and browse for tutorials.

But for touching up art: you can use adjustment tools like brightness/contrast, curves, and levels. Play around with the settings till you get the effects you want that clean lineart.

Learn to use layers: layers are the best part about gimp and photoshop, you can do thinks to one layer while leaving everything else alone. Remember the ‘multiply’ setting lets you color and tone without ruining the lineart below(it always stays black) and ‘overlay’ lets you white things out over color.

tablet: Using a mouse for touch ups can be a pain, you might look into a tablet for it. it takes getting used to but once you do you'll never wanna use that mouse for editing again-it's faster too if you like that.

But yeah DA has lots of tutorials. and most photoshop tuts also can be applied in gimp-so don't pass 'em up :)

I found a nifty tutorial on Smackjeeves.com It helped me a lot on how to make text bubbles, coloring, and such. Now I am experimenting with it all.
