I had a very difficult time getting the DD Alerter program to work with Windows 7 until I got a little help from Ozoneocean. The fix actually turned out to be pretty simple once I had it figured out.

Right click on the DD Alerter icon on your desktop.

Select ‘Troubleshoot compatability’ (second selection down).

Select ‘Troubleshoot Program’ (again, second option down).

Check mark the two boxes labeled
“The program worked in earlier versions of windows but won't run now”
and
“The program requires additional permissions”

Click Next.

Select the previous version of windows you were running the program under before switching to Windows 7.

Click Next.

Click the “Start Program” Button.

(If you have anti-virus and Anti-spyware programs they should ask you now if you want to allow the program to make changes to your system, click yes or whatever the appropriate response is for your anti-anything program.)

Tada! DD Alerter should now start properly. One last step though.

On the Program Compatability Wizard click Next.

Select “Yes, save these settings for this program” (First option).

Select “Close the Troubleshooter” and your done. DD Alerter now works in Virtualization Mode for Windows 7 as it emulates an older OS for that program.

(PS: I am running this on Windows 7 Home Edition which is apparently the most basic version of Windows 7. The higher end versions should also do the same as they have everything the basic version has plus extras.)

And one other thing. The DD Alerter works in the .NET framework. Windows 7 automatically comes with the latest version of .NET so you don't have to try and re-download it. It is built in to Windows 7.

Does this work for Vista? I downloaded one but I couldn't get it to run at all so I had it uninstalled. I think I was getting a little frustrated that I could not read my comments without having to go through all my pages. So if someone can explain how to do it, I'd be very grateful. :)

If that method works for Windows 7 it'll work perfectly for Vista as well.

The Alerter can be found here:

The link is in your “my Account” section. (link is under your mini avatar image on the right)

I'm confused. I never had another program on this computer other than windows 7 so I'm not sure what to pick as a previous one. And it seems to turn on but then it says it's not compatible and no alerts show up for anything that's updated.

I wonder if there is going to be a new version put up at some point?

I give up. I've tried every version of a before under the try something before window 7 and upon saving they all say not compatible.

Couldn't get it to work on my own. Followed the steps outlined here and it installed perfectly.

Had to pick “not known” as a previous version for Windows 7.

I haven't been able to get it to work for Vista, either. I just keep getting an error when I try to login. :\

Using Windows 7 here on a new comp. Success! Thanks for the info.

I looked up that missing dll file and got this: http://www.win7dll.info/pcwutl_dll.html

You may have a problem with your version of Windows 7 if you haven't got that since that file should be part of your OS.
Apparently it's part of what Windows 7 uses in order to work with some older Windows XP programs.

In that case I'm not sure what the solution would be. Repairing your Windows 7 instillation? Seems a bit drastic unless you're experiencing any problems with using other older programs.

Well, damn. That sucks. Everything else seems to be working fine, though, so I guess I'll just have to go without the alerter :/

So, I've often wondered about this… are Mac users up Sh#t Creek? Sorry for being crude, but I've recently been forced by circumstance to consolidate everything into my art computer(OSX), and frankly, it is a huge hassle to keep switching to Boot Camp or launch VM Ware Fusion or even Parallels. Both are a major resource drag. I hate to be a whiny crank and all, but isn't it about time that all of the stats were rolled into one convenient tracker page inside our comic control panels? .NET is horribly unstable, and the Alerter was constantly crashing on me and my associates. Drunk Duck is all nice and purty now that she's reborn. Time for a new tracking system… maybe? One that isn't OS dependent?

The alerter is obviously not geing to be updated now. It's way out of date.

What will happen is that its functionality will be incorporated into an updated comic control panel on the next site update (a while from now) and possibly an iphone/android app.

That's something we've been asking for a long time, to have those stats just put into the control panel area with a better interface for comment delivery. We'll be pushing for it when they are ready to do more upgrades.
