WEDNESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) – Drinking too much cola can increase the risk of a muscle problem called hypokalemia, experts warn.

In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions. Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.

Two of the patients were pregnant women who were admitted to hospital with low potassium levels. One was a 21-year-old woman who drank up to three liters of cola a day and complained of fatigue, appetite loss and persistent vomiting. An electrocardiogram revealed she had a heart blockage, and blood tests showed she had low potassium levels, the researchers explained in a news release.

The second pregnant patient, who'd consumed up to seven liters of cola a day for 10 months, had low potassium levels and was suffering from increasing muscular weakness, the researchers noted.

Both patients made a rapid and full recovery after they stopped drinking cola and took oral or intravenous potassium. The case studies are described in the June issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

“We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes,” and there's increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release.

Elisaf said the three most common ingredients in cola – glucose, fructose and caffeine – can contribute to hypokalemia.

“The individual role of each of these ingredients in the pathophysiology of cola-induced hypokalemia has not been determined and may vary in different patients,” Elisaf said. “However, in most of the cases we looked at for our review, caffeine intoxication was thought to play the most important role. This has been borne out by case studies that focus on other products that contain high levels of caffeine but no glucose or fructose.”

However, “caffeine-free cola products can also cause hypokalemia because the fructose they contain can cause diarrhea,” Elisaf said.

End of article.

When the parts that I highlighted caught my eye, I had only one thing to say… That can't be good for the baby.
Those were my two cents.

That sounds like what happened to my roommate this last school year. He went through packs of Pepsi like it was water, and he passed out one night. The hospital told him he had low potassium levels. I had figured there was some relation between the pop and his attack, but I thought it was just because he had some other medical issue. I didn't know this was something that could happen purely because of drinking the stuff too much.

OK. A couple of things…

-That level of intake of sweet drinks will lead to all sorts of other problems anyway, among them increased weight gain and probably type 2 diabetes.

-Consuming excessive amounts of liquid will leach all sorts of nutrients from your body, most importantly sodium, which will lead to muscle tiredness etc as well.

The average man should limit themselves to four or five liters of soda per day.

The average woman should limit themselves to only three or four liters.

If you exercise for at least 30 minutes a week though, you can have as much as ten liters of soda per day without any noticeable negative effects.

Humorman, you are SO FUNNY. Heavens, I just don't know what drunkduck would do without you.

Anyways, what kind of person gets pregnant and drinks 7 litres of soda a day? And then doesn't know what the problem is when they get ill? I'm sorry, but how dumb do you have to be? I find it just ridiculous that studies like this need to be done at all.

I honestly don't know how you drink that much of a soft drink. I can't even drink one. Nasty stuff.

I tell myself I'm alright as I rarley/never drink alcohol, but those guys are really pushing it.

Is it even normal to go over 5 litres of any kind of liquid consumption within a day?

Well, I do know that in order for your body to operate at peek performance, you need to drink at least two liters of water per day. However, if you attempt to drink those two liters in a span of one hour or less, you could suffer something called water poisoning. It's caused by an unbalance in your electrolytes that occurs if you consume too much water in one go. This is potentially fatal by the way.

Heck, you can even possible to suffer oxygen poisoning by breathing pure oxygen (like astronauts and divers do.

So I guess anything can be bad for you if you don't consume it moderately.
Those were my two cents.

How are people drinking multiple liters of soda a day? How? I drink about one cup of soda every few days (drinking cup, not measuring cup) and I work at a restaurant that lets me have free fountain drinks. That is some dedication there.

If you're hankering after a drink with a taste of something, try lemon water. Water with a little squirt of lemon in it. I drink it all the time.
