Now the color looks better and just a tweak of the color, the forum makes it simpler to look at. Only left is the main forum page table that still looks a bit packed without the grouping of similar categories. I'll just wait and see if there are any possible changes that is going to take place soon. Good job, guys!

phpbb is easy to integrate a sign on with, and if you set it up properly spam bots aren't an issue. It's really questionable to reinvent a forum system when you have available to you such a good one that is so easily integrated with sites all over the world, and so easliy modified to add whatever functionality you want, especially when on the debut of your home grown system people lose features they had and loved.
phpBB is great, for sure. It has a lot of problems though. It is frequently targetted and exploited by ‘hackers’, and requires constant maintenance. It also does a massive quantity of unnecessary queries. Also, IMO the code is heavily over engineered, making modification and integration a difficult process. Sure, it's easy to inject signups, but integration is far more complex than that. At BEST I could hope to multiply the queries it was performing in an integration process. This forum is integrated, and is easily modifiable for any purposes. We can build a million features onto it and still keep it lighter and more relevant than phpBB.
It had always been a goal of mine to some way get away from the ‘free forum’ option. I just never really had the time. These forums, while lighter in generic features, will allow us to build myriad specialized features.

That said, kudos on the work. Making a forum system is anything but easy, and it's certainly a decent one so far. I'm VERY glad that the colouring has changed. The grey is sooooooo much easier to read :) And a bigger kudos for doing it so fast. That should allay most fears of corporate carelessness.

Gracias :)

If I had one minor quibble about the colors, it would be the top “ | Quote | Edit | Delete ” section. The grey over grey is hard to read. I'd suggest something like the yellow admins have in thier avatar section.

Oh, also, the quote in quote should alternate colors, too, IMO.

But I'm sure that's all being worked on. :)

(stuff that Volte6 said about phpbb that Ronson also touched on)

It is definitely true that building your own system makes it easier to add things to. I guess that it all comes down to what kind of additions you plan to make. If they are minor, then it's not at all difficult to add to phpbb. If it involves some fairly major things, then yeah… you probably are better off making your own system.

I don't know if I'd want that whole quote reply bar to be yellow. It makes the forum look a little old-school Batman, y'know? But maybe if the “Quote/ Edit” text stayed the bright blue it is when I hover my mouse over it, it wouldn't be too garish, and it would still pop.

We lack signatures, those are indispensable in a forum.
The log in problem is kind of solved at least.

I would prefer if we could have text signatures to image ones, image ones make forums distorted and ugly in my opinion.

My only REAL gripe is i still don't know if there is any new posts in a catergory which is annoying.

I'd like to have a signature that is large, red, and says QUICK, MAN! CLING TENACIOUSLY TO MY BUTTOCKS!

I do not hate the forums but I am here to submit a suggested change:

This cookie crumb trail is pretty crappy, it doesn't tell you much:

“View Categories » View Topics » I Hate This New Forum”

OK, But I would rather know

“I am in this category >> I am in this forum >> I am in this thread”

Such as,

“Drunk Duck Main Forums >> General Discussion >> I Hate This New Forum”

That would be ever so much more informative. :)

Cherry Pepsi is pretty good. I used to love vanilla coke and then they stopped making it and started making CHERRY vanilla coke which I soon realized tasted exactly like regular vanilla coke. Umm… I guess there is a metaphore or something in there.

The new forum feels more cozy. Like we're all in a crowded room. Who wants to snuggle?
Also, I'm number 30. Wow, that's pretty great.

Don't nobody say he ent done nuthin fer yeh!

I want to know whether or not there isa new post without opening the forum D:
Lots of folks have mentioned this, I even mentioned it when we admins had access to the beta version (ha ha yes we knew forums were coming ages ago!). I imagine it's kind of difficult. I was thinking about it today and wondering how they would differentiate between when someone logs onto DD now versus checking the forums… just ‘cos you go onto DD to check your comments doesn’t mean you want to check the forums, but you don't want to check the forums later and have missed ‘new’ posts because you didn't check the forums earlier… (does that make sense?) Maybe it's a special cookie thing…

i guess you can't please everyone.

oh well as long as recent posts come back i'll deal with the brightness.

sorry… but we didn't make it WHITE at least ;) It's sorta a compromise, no?

yeah when you put it that way gray doesn't sound to bad at all.

Yeah, gray kicks ass. All we need now are those giant enemy crabs and real-time weapon changing and we'd be set.

You guys ARE going to consider those for a feature…

Right?

my comment about the right panel hasn't still been addressed…

I don't want that right panel there at all…. if I wanted to know whenever my favorites were getting updated, I'd use the Drunk duck alerter for that. and plus it's still annoying to see it there with asterisks next to the updated comics that I've already checked out and don't need to check again for updates since there was no more updates ever since I viewed it today.

and plus, it's what makes the forums look so crowded, and pushed to one side as if the forums was only an afterthought.
have the right panel on any page EXPECT the forums!

and at least, if you're not gonna remove it competely then at least give us an opition to remove/and or hide the right panel if we wish when we visit the fourms.

Or even better. You know how you can click that little ‘i wana c more’ buttons on the recently most updated? Just apply the similiar theory to the favorites section everywhere. That way it doesn't show up at all until you click the little ‘i wana c more’ button.

EDIT: And we want giant enemy crabs too.

EDIT AGAIN: And you can't forget that real-time weapon changing.

oh by the way? “Next 20” links or such simlar links to get us to the next pages is really misleading. when seeing that they might think the next 20 pages, and not the next 20 comments. shouldn't that be “next page” and “last page”?

and you could seriously add an “last page” link too.
