Debate and Discussion

Is there even a legitimate debate over climate change anymore?

Since the issue was first mentioned, global climate change has been a topic of heavy debate. Now, with more and more science to back it up, Al Goge becoming the figurehead of the movement, George Bush mentioning it in his State of the Union address, and the issue mentioned in the UN, are there even grounds to argue that climate change anymore? I'm not asking whether or not climate change exists, I'm asking whether or not there is a legitimate argument that global warming does not exist, what with so many people, including our president, acknowledging its existence or at least agreeing to discuss it.

well … unless you haven't been outside in the past couple of years, i think it's pretty obvious that the planet is screwed up !
Raging fires in California, Water shortages in Australia, Huricane Katrina, and this was the first year on record that it didn't snow in Tokyo !

You know, growing up and going through school, global warming was just a fact of life to me. I never questioned it, and my teachers taught it as fact. I had never even heard it was being debated until a few years ago, and I still haven't heard any reasons why it might be false.

I don't think very many intelligent or serious people really try to argue that the climate isn't changing, what the anti-global warming people mostly argue is about why it's changing and if there is a danger. Most of the people who don't believe in global warming say that it's just a natural temperature cycle and the planet probably goes through it all the time. It used to be warmer in the past, and all. The problem with this thinking is that even if it is natural we will still be screwed by it, so we might as well do what we can to slow it.

yea , i agree , arguing that climate change is natural and therefore none of our business is like saying AIDS is natural and we should just let it run its course !
but the people who say this kind of crap are usually lazy ass hyper-religious types who are looking forward to the destruction of the planet !

Same with me. Most of the arguments I've heard boiled down to, “Well, Al Gore isn't even a scientist!!1!one!!”

There really isn't a debate about whether it's happening or not. The debate is about whether humans are causing it. See, there's one side that thinks that this is what the planet naturally does, but then there's all the evidence from carbon emissions and very large spikes in temperature in the last 10 years that show that humans are probably responsible for at least 90% of the climate change.
