THIS IS BIZZARRE

It must be a lonely place over there in Japan. KIM JONG IL is right!!! Evil evil fascist japan is full of lonely people unlike happy happy North Korea!!! lol!

TOKYO (Reuters) - She is big-busted, petite, very friendly, and she runs on batteries.

A Japanese firm has produced a 38 cm (15 inch) tall robotic girlfriend that kisses on command, to go on sale in September for around $175, with a target market of lonely adult men.

Using her infrared sensors and battery power, the diminutive damsel named “EMA” puckers up for nearby human heads, entering what designers call its “love mode”.

“Strong, tough and battle-ready are some of the words often associated with robots, but we wanted to break that stereotype and provide a robot that's sweet and interactive,” said Minako Sakanoue, a spokeswoman for the maker, Sega Toys.

“She's very lovable and though she's not a human, she can act like a real girlfriend.”

EMA, which stands for Eternal Maiden Actualization, can also hand out business cards, sing and dance, with Sega hoping to sell 10,000 in the first year.

Japan, home to almost half the world's 800,000 industrial robots, envisions a $10-billion market for artificial intelligence in a decade.

There's no such thing as a robot really. May as well call your car a robot or an electric kettle: Scifi-fantasy anthromorphisation of machines. It's a charming conceit, but tiresome.

That thing is a motorised teadybear. any man that bought it and used it would have issues. Worrying issues. -_-

Yeah… only 15 inches tall? I think those men are going to stay lonely for a while longer.

Robot:
A mechanical device that sometimes resembles a human and is capable of performing a variety of often complex human tasks on command or by being programmed in advance

I think these fall under this category.

They do, but a horse with a horn on its head also looks like a unicorn ;)

The name was invented by the playwright. We use it today to just further the fantasy… Think about it for a while, think about what a robot actually is and then you'll work it out. -Simply another device, usually with computer control, sometimes not. It's not really a technical term, people usually apply it to any machine that has computer controlled articulated parts, and that's about all it is, nothing else.

All the rest is scifi-fantasy baggage- looking human like, will they develop emotions, will they take over… All that is the stuff of dreams.
Your PC will have emotions sooner than some stupid puppet that walks badly on two leg-like stilts.

It's a teddy bear for very strange people.

I think the general concept associated with the term “robot” is a humanoid machine that is capable of moving by its own device; something not so reliant on humans to function. Or something similar with such an outstanding trait. I usually think of the being from The Day the Earth Stood Still or like a giant Asimo or something of the sort. But the term is much broader than to simply encompass these within its meaning.

Don't get me wrong, though, Ozone. I can see what your saying and I see the truth and merit to it. I just believe what I'm saying is more correct. :)

The term for those creations is “android”. The idea is that it looks human, even vaguely. What you're referencing is indeed SciFi fantasy there though, literally in the literal sense of that word. :)

And what's an android really but an electronic, motorised sculpture? MmmHmm, Since unless your machine is meant to perform tasks like the replicants in Blade Runner, giving it a human shape is usually counter productive to most of the functions it might be meant for.

I think an inflatable doll would do better than that “robot” for a man's “needs,” if you know what I mean. ;) And it would be cheaper, and it wouldn't b**ch at you. Because let's face it, you guys hate it when we b**ch at you. :D

When I was a lad all we had were inflatable dolls, and we liked them just fine.
