No, SAL is an actually character in the sequel to 2001 a space odyssey, She is exactly like HAL, except she has an efeminate voice and has a blue light instead of a red light. She asks when doctor chandra tells her he intends to remove her memory units like David bowman did to HAL in order to asses what sort of damage might have been done prior going on a mission to investigate the discovery “Will I dream” to which Doctor chandra responds “Of course you will. All intelligent beings dream. Nobody knows why.”
This is interesting, because later, on board the discovery, When chandra tells HAL that he must sacrafice himself to save the crew of the the craft sent to investigate the discovery HAL asks the same question, but Chandra responds with “I don't know.”

sorry I forgot hal has the red light, its been awhile since I read 2010
excellent book if you have an interest in astronomy or science at all.
chandra kills herself over hals sacrifice,I never knew if I should consider hal and sal merely as computers or as being alive but this is too much for this forum
the first computer I ever knew that could be afraid. perhaps he can dream, of course
that would not be a conventional computer if he could.
