Debate and Discussion

Let's say hypothetically...

…that I was a republican. How would you respond if I said,
“I believe John McCain and Sarah Palin would be excellent leaders for this country.”

What if I said,
“Barack Obama is a terrorist, so I will never vote for him.”

How about,
“Anyone who votes for Obama is either a deluded moron or mentally incompetent.”

Now, what if I was a democrat? How would you respond if I said,
“I believe Barack Obama and Joe Biden would be excellent leaders for this country.”

What if I said,
“John McCain is a racist, so I will never vote for him.”

How about,
“Anyone who votes for McCain is either a deluded moron or mentally incompetent.”

What would you make of this?

Billy vs. Tree – The epic struggle of boy versus tree.
Sonic Colores – It looks like it's going to be a good game because I love how the way it makes me grow.

Most of them are overly partisan claims and dull to address. they would ignite the usual round of "my dad is better than your dad" arguments.

What I'd make of it if YOU put forward any of those is that you were working in your usual role as an agent provocateur. ;)

The first in each set are quite OK though. It's good to make those statements and then go on to discuss why someone believes them to be true. But what's the point of this topic? To illustrate the mostly pointless and inherent divisive nature of this sort of political argument? Then why not say so instead of going about it like this?

I would say that regardless of party, you've let the Republicans frame your argument. The “terrorist” and “racist” labels are due to stories coming out of the far right Republicans.

Barack Obama has continued to discuss the issues and has not once accused McCain of anything more than ignoring the racist anger that erupts at his and Palin's rallies.

No rational Democrat thinks that McCain is a racist, but his party is certainly stoking the “fear of other” in their base.

Conversely, there are quite a few Republicans who think Obama is a terrorist (or Communist, or socialist, or antichrist), and that is being implied by the Republican cadidates, and screamed by the nutty fringe of the Republican party.

Barack Obama has certainly never accused John Sidney McCain III of being a racist.

McCain has certainly intimated that the people Obama associates with are terrorists - when he isn't arguing that we don't really know Barack Obama - or when he isn't arguing that he's a socialist.

But either negative connotation for either party has been created by the Republican party, not the Democratic party. So don't let them distract you with such ridiculousness.

I'd make of it that your post is partisan.

Ditto. Just end it already. I don't want to hear these extreme opinions anymore, this election season has gone on too long.

So how's the weather? How about them Rays?

How is it partisan? I merely put similar points of view opposite from each other in the political spectrum. If I were to put that same message on a conservative forum, I would've probably been flamed for blasting McCain and Palin.

You've also let this go on for too long without providing a point… and the only point I can imagine now is that you're trying to see if you would get a reaction out of people.

Make sure your next post in this thread creates a good reason for it to exist, or it won't anymore.

But you didn't. You used the lie that Republicans say about Obama, and the statement that Republicans lie about Democrats using.

Read Ronson's post. He is correct.

The point is this:

There are a several posts in the forums about how scary Sarah Palin and the GOP are, and even though some posts in there could be perceived as extreme as the comment I made, those posts are dismissed as, “Well, part of what he said is true,” or “Her post wasn't made to offend on purpose.” However, even though I posted a completely ambiguous political message that could be perceived conservative or liberal, depending on interpretation, you automatically assume I'm bashing Obama and state that my comment is a lie perpetuated by the republican party to scare people into voting for McCain. If you read my original post, you'll see that I have said the exact same thing about each candidate/party. In no way was I trying to slander another candidate. I wrote that post to see the opinions of people about the levels of extremity in politics (I'm a democrat by the way).

Intentional or not, I'm sorry. That post is exactly how Ronson described. Why do you choose to ignore his post, and just keep acting like he didn't give you a valid point of view?

"Obama is a terrorist“ is a lie perpetuated by the Republican side. His base uses this tired line over and over again.

McCain is a racist" is NOT a lie perpetuated by Democratic side. No rational Democratic supporter has ever said this.

So exactly how is that not making your post one sided? Try using lie that the Democrats ACTUALLY USE, and it will be even. But I bet you'll be hard pressed to find something that Democrats smear in such a uniform fashion.

Not all republicans are war-mongering idiots just like not all democrats are flower-power hippies. There are moderates to each side, and by saying that all, or even the majority of republicans believe Obama is a terrorist is being a little short-sighted. Besides, if you look on the Internet long enough you'll find a few names democrats have for McCain (POW crybaby, George W. Bush II, etc.).

Personally, I wouldn't mind hijacking the thread and making it about new delicious recipes.

My office is having a Halloween Pot Luck tomorrow and I'm cooking homemade soy cheese and beef enchiladas! I can post the recipe – it's yummy and almost half-vegetarian (except for the beef). lol!

Or we could discuss the recipe for the slow-cooked pork roast with stew vegetables my wife and I just made recently. It was my first time using a dry rub on “the other white meat.” We let it cook for 5.5 hours overnight in just enough water to cover the bottom of the roasting pan, covered with aluminum foil (no holes).

The next morning, we cooked the vegetables in aus jus from the roasted pork, added some fresh ground black pepper, a little seasoned salt and 2 finely diced garlic cloves. We brought it to a boil then settled it down to medium for a few minutes. My wife cut up the meat and mixed in the seasoned vegetables. Then we put it in the fridge till we were ready to serve it as supper. As it got closer to mealtime, we cooked up some seasoned collard greens, fresh baked biscuits and the result was definitely mmmmm mmmm good!

Finally! Dueeast brought some validity and usefulness to this thread. And I think that's where we'll leave it, too. I'll lock the thread right now while it's ahead.
