I thought this was cool/easy especially if you have a space themed comic
—————–>>
Open a new Photoshop file with 1000 x 1500px.

“Star environment “

Set the foreground color to white and the background color to black. Create a new layer and colored this black. Use Filter / Noise / Add Noise with amount = 70% ( Distribution = Uniform; Monochromatic = on). Apply Image / Adjust / Brightness and Contrast with Brightness = -70 and Contrast = -10. After then go to Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur with radius = 2. And finally we apply Levels (ctrl + l). Important are the left and middle sliders. Move they together until that the stars appear (see the settings on the Image aside).

It looks empty. To create more stars we have to reply the operation. That mean: create again a new layer – colored it black but set this time the layer blend mode to “Lighten”. Then apply Add Noise, Brightness and Contrast , Gaussian Blur and Levels again. Try to change a little bit the settings to create different star formations. You can also set the opacity down or delete with the Eraser some stars. The aim is, don’t create an equal star background.

Repeat this steps until you have enough stars.

Hey, that looks great :) I'll have to keep this!

Might be worth putting in as a tutorial so it doesn't get lost?

Does look quite useful. Also quite odd seeing Photoshop in German.
That's “Dr. BlkKnight” to all of you.

:D This is like the lite version of a tutorial I found the other month (sans the galaxies and lens flare, lol). Says in a few paragraphs what that tut took a whole page to. Nice.

This might be the one you're referring to? http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html But this one is for hyperrealisticinsanestarfieldsofdoom.

I used it once. It works pretty well, but it's more for epic artsy stuff of dooooom.

My illutration teacher taught me a method to do a similiar thing on traditional paper, but I forget the name of the compound used. Cool to see in photoshop, though.

or you could just get a piece of black construction paper and do some splatter effect on it with white ink….bam! instant space background that doesnt look so computer generated!

maybe not, but half a second messing with the levels would fix that.

Or you could lay down a flat wash of indigo and use wet-in-wet to add in reds and blues. Before it dries, sprinkle sea salt. Once it dries completely, wipe the sea salt off, take a q-tip, and dab some rubbing alcohol on the paper.

Viola, an intricate space scene complete with nebulas.

Wait, what was this topic about again?
