China has now broadcast footage from Top Gun, one of the greatest Tom Cruise shirtless playing volleyball movies OF ALL TIME, and claimed it was footage of a Chinese test flight.
Handshakes and mustaches are the only ways to know how much you can truly trust a man.

That's just embarrassing.

I mean, that's reeeeaaaly embarrassing.
Especially since the F-5 wasn't even a convincing stand in for a Mig when that film first came out in the late 80's.

Recognising the silhouette of jet fighters isn't difficult because they're obvious, simple mechanical shapes and there are only so many different types out there.
…or maybe I just spent way too much time looking through my Jane's and Observers handbook of aeroplanes as a little kid.

Not as ridiculous as you might think… Decoy weapon systems are big business and good strategy. During the Kosovo situation many of the Serbian “tanks” destroyed by coalition forces were actually fakes like that one :)

The Serbian tanks were often cruder as they were what were the so-called “Quaker guns” made out of logs and not cool looking inflatables. But hey it fooled MacClellan. There's also the one about the tank that was broken down from a lack of spare parts that was moved from place to place on a truck and NATO kept blowing it up again and again and counting it as a new tank destroyed every time.

The mission of the Chinese exercise was to precisely recreate the American movie Top Gun as part of the new Chinese Air Force Top Gun program. I think the US Navy will sell them some used F-14s cheap so they can buy some F-35s. ;)
