If you have room, get both and play around on them. Paint.net is simpler for those used to Paint. GIMP is a little more complex.

I'd have to agree with what Raccoo said, Paint.net is a lot easier to use but GIMP is good as well…though, I tend to use the effects from Paint.net a lot more than the GIMP effects.

that's just me though.

I use the Gimp for the majority of my comiking. I scan Imgs into it, ink'em there and do a bunch of stuff with them. I'm completly devoted to the Gimp

But I have paint.Net on my compy. Why? because I think It does a few things better. The Gimp is great for high level comics, with lots of detail, High layers and text and stuff.

But Paint(and .Net) is good for smallewr stuff, like bitmaps. Come June/July in 09, my Stick figure comic is coming. I did all of it in paint.net except for text. I liked the font options I had in the Gimp better…

Paint.Net had some sweet gradient control, though… and the whole right click for a different color is great.

Anyway, your probably board of me just rambling. My advice? Download both, try'em out, uninstall your least favorite.

I use Paint.NET to draw parts of my comic… I don't use GIMP at all because it requires just too much work… GIMP is good for most things, but it doesn't really excel at anything. Paint.NET is simple and easy to use. It excels at some things but sucks at others.

I recommend Paint.NET.

I recommend downloading a trying both. See which one you like better. Also, try going through one or two tutorials for both.

Personally I like the gimp for its Tablet support and large community (tons of free stuff, brushes, patterns, etc)

I tried GIMP and hated it. I never ever want to use it again. There's a good list of graphics programs herehttp://mashable.com/2007/10/27/graphics-toolbox/ if you're willing to experiment a little.

Paint.NET has a nice interface, but I always found the gimp to be much more feature rich and suitable for my needs.

Gimp 4 life!!!

Nah, just kidding…..
It's really good to try out and see. First time when I tried to color with gimp I hated it….Because I wasn't good colorist.

Anyway I really suggest that you try out different tools to learn more.
To know everything is curse, To know nothing is bless….
